Toenail removed.

I had my toenail (fungal infection) removed without a local anaesthetic the other day.
I can't tell you how bad the experience was. Or maybe I was being a wuss. Thoughts?

You mean you bumped it off yourself accidently or a dr/nurse/midwife removed it on purpose? Did you ask for analgesia- esp if you are a HP yourself? Confused

Polnm · 23/08/2020 15:25

By a drunk in the pub?

GreyGardens88 · 23/08/2020 15:27

I once dropped something on my toe and my big toenail slowly turned yellow and eventually fell off completely leaving bare skin behind. It didn't hurt but was fascinating

You owed money to a Serbian crime gang?

That sounds horrible and sore. Why no local? I’d have insisted.

I suppose the moral of the story is treat your fungal nail infection before it comes to that stage. That will save the nail. It will also stop it spreading to others in the household.

I got a small bottle if stuff to paint on. Took a year but the toenail is fine now and I can wear polish again.

Do you have other health issues you are ignoring? Perhaps this is a wake up call?

Yawningyawning · 23/08/2020 15:50

Ouch I had local for the ingrown strip and that was bad enough. Poor you

Dozer · 23/08/2020 15:51

Owww! If a healthcare professional did that, it was surely bad practice!

DD ripped off her thumbnail in a door once, her scream was horrible. I’ve lost a couple of toenails through injury too, but not as bad as that.

Elieza It can’t always be saved. You can try treating it in the early stages, and you can try treating it for years, but sometimes removal is the only way.

Hi. The fungal nail infection got really bad within 3 weeks. There was no sign of it when I put nail polish on it 3 weeks ago. Went to podiatrist who took the nail off before I could say anything. He said it wouldn't hurt. It did. When I got home found it's usual to have a local anaesthetic. I'm just a little bit traumatised!

You were not being a wuss. Can podiatrists be struck off?

That particular one should not be allowed to practise.

Dozer · 23/08/2020 16:50

I’d complain to / about the podiatrist.

Midwife1997 · 23/08/2020 16:58

Yes I'm going to complain. He was brutal! My worst nightmare come true. Has anyone else had a toenail removed without anaesthetic?

He sounds nasty if he did that. I had both mine off, but under local.

Yellredder · 23/08/2020 17:14

Bloody hell! I was under GA for mine!

Mookie81 · 23/08/2020 19:50

Sorry about your pain!
I also have a fungal infection, if I get the nail removed will it grow back?

Elouera · 23/08/2020 20:38

At least the anti fungal tincture can work better now without the nail.
