How the hell do you clean a king size quilted bedspread?

This is doing my head in. The dog has been sleeping on my heavy, quilted cotton bedspread and there is a mark but in general it needs cleaning as it’s been 5 years 😳...it’s been folded on a chair for the summer (yes I know) but soon I know I’ll be needing it. There’s no way it’ll go in a washing machine.

Ideas so far: put it over the washing line and hose it down after a bit of detergent (dh’s idea)

Take it to the launderette (I think it’s too big? Not been to a launderette since 1995)

Throw it away and get another one

Dry clean it (yuk horrible chemicals, don’t wNt to sleep with those thanks)

Wtf does it take, I can’t be the only person with a manky bedspread.

Lots of launderettes have a service to wash quilts... just take it along.

QueenOfThorns · 23/08/2020 07:27

A bird came down the chimney (somehow) in our spare room and pooed on the bedspread, so I didn’t have a lot of choice about getting ours cleaned! I took it to the local launderette and they did it no problem. They’ve also done super king-sized duvets for us. Just ring around a few places and ask?

There are large washing machines (18kg) on some petrol stations forecourts (I know that sounds bizarre) but you could see if you can locate one of those.

Most dry cleaners can provide a wash service too, I have to take ours about 9 miles, just google.

My local Morrison's does this - same day service wash for duvets and bedspreads

Sunshineandmoonlight · 23/08/2020 07:37

Take it to a laundry company

Noneformethanks · 23/08/2020 07:38

The washing machines on forecourts are called revolution laundry and they’re owned by the photome people.

Dd took a duvet to one for me last week and got it washed.

It cost £8 and the machine takes 18kg

TheTeenageYears · 23/08/2020 07:41

It will fit in a launderette machine and dryer and doing it yourself rather than as a service wash will be the cheapest option.

Twilightstarbright · 23/08/2020 07:48

Service wash at a launderette, although those petrol station ones sound great.

PatsyJStone · 23/08/2020 07:50

Morrison’s have some large outdoor washing machines. I took a super king duvet and there was still space for more. Sometimes ‘dry cleaners’ are as expensive as buying new - just for a wash and dry.

Noneformethanks · 23/08/2020 07:51

I didn’t dry mine but there was also a dryer dd said and it took 18kg as well.

I have a down duvet in my bed and the plan is to get her to take it soon.

Somethingkindaoooo · 23/08/2020 07:54

Wash it yourself at a laundry mat.
Most places will have double or triple loaders

BarbaraofSeville · 23/08/2020 07:57

Laundrette machines are much bigger than normal machines and quite fast (about 45 mins IIRC) so I'd just do a normal wash on one of those.

Go in the morning on a dry day so you can line dry it. One thing I do remember about laundrette machines is that the spin isn't very efficient so it costs a fortune to tumble dry anything washed in their machines, but this is going back over 20 years..

It was so bad that SIL bought a spinner and would do the washing in the laundrette, take it home to spin and then take it back to tumble dry if the weather was bad because it saved her a few quid each time, but she did live round the corner from the laundrette.

FloweringFlowers · 23/08/2020 08:00

Our washing machine has broken, so I’ve been to the laundrette a few times this week, massive machines 30kg, but yes the spin isn’t the best.

DH was sick on our super king duvet last year!!! Anyhow took it for a service wash and dry, think it was £15.

LulworthBlues · 23/08/2020 09:51

Take it to the dry cleaners
