'foreign sweets'

Has anyone tried foreign sweets and been surprised at the taste/thought they were like something in UK until they bit into them?

I have had Indian sweets before (I don't mean the very rich stuff like Barfi - I mean packaged sweets) so I knew they were spicy.

The Pakistani porter just handed me some sweets and said they tasted of cola. The wrapper showed what might have been an apple but it was unclear what it was meant to be but there was deffo an afterbite of spice! It was weird (to me) because the spice was savoury rather than something like cinnamon or I suppose ginger (yes I know that can be savoury) and I am trying to think what it is. No point asking him as his English is not that good!

I once bought a tin of sweets in Egypt. They had bright wrappers so I thought it was their version of quality stret. Nope! Just boiled sweets!

Fish sweets in Japan Envy

Durian sweets.

They're... interesting Envy

I’ve been to Japan twice and we loved all the sweets and chocolate -it was lovely.
American chocolate isn’t nice and Cadbury’s is the same now. I can’t eat it anymore.
In Italy we had cake/sweets like kinder and they were lovely. Chinese white rabbit sweets are interesting though if you can try them!

I was coming to say Swedish salted licorice! It was definitely a shock Grin But once I knew what to expect I found I didn't actually mind it after the first try.

This is part of the fun of working in an office - people bring sweets back from their travels (not this year, obviously!) and then it's a game to see who's brave enough to try them ... I did try the dried Durian, nobody else did!

@Prokupatuscrakedatus

No, I really don't think so! They were in pretty decorated tins. And there was no 'medicinal' taste, just salt water and pine needles!

Are you German/living in Germany? I was born there and we used to go back a lot, but I haven't been as an adult. I miss it! Say hi to it for me!

Can’t believe no one has mentioned the horror that is Turkish Delight. The texture gives me the dry boke.

On the other hand, the German sweets available in Lidl called Friit- amazing!

I am living here (German actually) - I said hi for you to Berlin. Berlin says hi and merhaba back Smile

The only 'sweet' I knew that contains pineneedles is 'Tannenblut' - sth my MIL tried to force into me when I had a cold. But you sent me to google - pineneedles in sweets are a thing here: pineneedle-cream-caramel anyone?

Green tea kit kat brought back from Malaysia by a colleague. Grim green stuff instead of chocolate
I love them! Our local supermarket had them in stock for a week and then never again.

LemonandLimeShark · 23/08/2020 19:57

Turkish delight is amazing. One of my favourite sweets.

I looooove ‘winto green’ flavoured Lifesavers from the US. They look like Polos but taste like the smell of Deep Heat Grin

FedUpAtHomeTroels · 23/08/2020 20:12

We get Dd's best friend Japanese sweets for her birthday each year, we never know what flavour they are, she's mad about them.
I too dislike Hersey Chocolate, although when you do the chocolate factory tour, the smell is wonderful. I used to give the kids my free samples.
Red Hots are bloody awful. My friend made cupcakes, and had one on the top of each cake, I nearly vomited when I bit it. But I don't like cinnamon anyway.

pinkbalconyrailing · 23/08/2020 21:12

throat 'sweets' 'original flavour' in the netherlands can be disgusting. a mixture of licorice (which I like), vinegar and 'medicine'.

MaryBerrysChutney · 23/08/2020 21:22

An Indian colleague one gave me some cardamom flavoured fudgy thing in a red wrapper. It was really nice, can’t remember it’s name. She also gave me a candy with a spicy centre and it made me throw up... that was the weirdest thing I ever tasted!!

Chemenger · 24/08/2020 07:24

I love Turkish delight (not the fry’s version, the real stuff). Even better, nobody else in my family likes it so it doesn’t disappear.

I had a thread on here last year about cheese flavoured chocolate that I bought in the USA, from the “gourmet” section of Wholefoods, just as foul as it sounds. Expensive chocolate in the USA is usually delicious, but not that one.

My husband is Chinese so I've had the white rabbit sweets a few times they taste milky to me x
