Would you fly?

To a 'safe' country right now? We have booked a few days away and people are really divided about it. Some friends are calling us ridiculous for doing it, and some are all for it.
Wondered what the feeling was on here

I have a holiday booked for a few weeks time, currently though the travel company we have booked with aren't flying there. We do have a back up plan for another country if this one does not go ahead.
I'm not worried about flying or going to another country, I can quarantine when back with no problems.
I'm also in the vulnerable group, but I am not putting my life on hold for a virus I may or may not get.

Personally I would not until more is known about inflight air circulation and Covid transmission. However so far the risks are small but there are technically risks as with all enclosed indoor no ventilation air conditioned spaces. I asked a commercial airline pilot neighbour who claims it is fine (naturally!) but obviously mentioned how the aviation sector was being economically destroyed and understood the reasons for hesitancy. Personally I would rather drive for a short haul staycation or continental Europe trip to destinations trending downwards on Covid so technically safer than UK. So difficult to avoid the next Covid further waves hotspots globally!

Yes the inflight thing is probably the biggest concern. Also at the airport I suppose.

Depends if things change and you can isolate for 2 weeks, or what you’d do if FCO adobe changed and your insurance was invalid whilst away.

I’m not going on holiday outside of the UK this year, there’s too many variables and I don’t see the point of the stress for the sake of a few days.

TeddyIsaHe · 22/08/2020 13:46

*advice not adobe

ChaChaCha2012 · 22/08/2020 13:52

If your insurance is valid when you travel, it won't become invalid if FCO advice changes whilst you're away. You didn't travel against FCO advice. You may not be covered for the costs of return travel, depending on what the policy states, but you'd still be covered for healthcare, theft etc as normal. If your flight was cancelled the airline still has a duty to get you home, though this may mean making your own arrangements and reclaiming the cost later.

If you're ok with the possibility of quarantine then I'd go for it.

I have been flying for work recently and I felt completely safe. Not with a low cost airline though so that might make a difference.

All the airports I've been through have been so deserted that social distancing hasn't been a problem. Temperature checks on entering some of them and masks at all times, both in the airport and on the flights.

I've just made sure that I've used the bathroom before i board so i don't have to use it on the plane.

We flew back from our Menorca holiday a couple of weeks ago. Before we left I had a few friends question it, saying they wouldn't feel comfortable flying at the moment. We aren't classed as vulnerable and could quarantine on return (though the restrictions weren't in place at the time we left) so we decided to take our chances.
The airports were great, we flew through security quicker than ever before, not all shops or restaurants open but people were distancing/ wearing masks so it was fine. Flew out Jet2, flight was fine, they changed some of the seating to enable distancing. The only thing I would say is that there was a bit of a scrum to get bags out of overhead lockers on landing, though you could have just waited as in normal times. We flew back Easyjet and they solved this issue by asking you to do this one row at a time. Fantastic flight, distanced, they served food and drinks. Breezed through home airport on arrival.
I would do it!

I have recently flown with my 3 DC. All went well. We had plenty of hand sanitiser and a box of medical masks for taxi/plane, enough to change them as required.
Airports at both end were pretty empty, so not much interaction. The plane company was also keeping numbers down (or no-one is flying) so we were about 70 in an airbus which according to the company (Easyjet) has HEPA air filters.
It is more stressful than usual but it was not bad, and so far we have been well at both ends (day 10 since return).

NotPennysBoat · 22/08/2020 14:24

Would and have. Flight was only a quarter full and airports at both ends very quiet. Masks mandated, so EVERYONE is wearing one.

You're actually very safe once in flight, because the air is filtered before it's recirculated.

If you're not in a vulnerable group then I'm not sure why you would worry?

Meruem · 22/08/2020 14:38

I’ve flown to and from 2 European countries since restrictions were eased. For me the airport wasn’t a problem at all, so much quieter than normal and very easy to socially distance. The flight not so much! Our flights were a mix of BA and easyJet and BA did leave seats free at regular intervals but easyJet was crammed in like sardines! However I am now at the point where 14 days has elapsed since the second trip and I didn’t catch COVID.

Lepetitpiggy · 22/08/2020 15:39

Thank you everyone! We evaluated the risks and made the choice so I'm glad we're not alone! It's just DH and I so no children worries!
Quarantine, although annoying wouldn't be a massive issue so fingers crossed all will be ok :)
