Contact lenses - roughly how much do they cost a month?

NannyR · 22/08/2020 11:03

I wear varifocal glasses and I've been getting a bit fed up of wearing them recently - despite many adjustments they still slip down on my nose. I've been thinking I might try contact lenses and see if I prefer them.
If you wear daily lenses how much do they cost you a month? Are there any hidden costs besides the cost of the lenses? Really daft question - I was looking online and boxes of lenses were priced for 30 - is that 30 pairs or 30 single lenses meaning you need to buy two packs?
Thanks.

I just paid £190 for three months worth so 90 pairs, they are multi focal daily lenses, it includes all my eye tests and after care

goose124 · 22/08/2020 11:07

monthly disposables from Specsavers cost about £13 a month, cheapest and best service I could find. Plus, being on their contact lens scheme means very if discounts on glasses too.

Pipandmum · 22/08/2020 11:08

I pay £20.50 a month for monthly disposables, the cleaning solution, annual eye test and aftercare.

Prices can vary depending on what type of lenses you wear, sounds like you that price is 30 pairs for £30
But I would think you need multi focal lenses which do cost more because they let you see like a varifocal.
Rather than just having distance and wearing reading specs over the top

SmellsLikeAHamsterCage · 22/08/2020 11:10

It depends on your prescription. Mine is £12.50 a month for monthly lenses. This includes eye tests and lenses checks. I do t get the solution or cases though as I just buy them in bulk and it works out cheaper.

My son's monthly lenses with solution and cases were £21 a month. But his eyesight is worse than mine.

loudev · 22/08/2020 11:10

I pay £23 a month for good quality ones. They are monthly's, I have aftercare and tests included in it. Also free glasses.

Flavabobble · 22/08/2020 11:12

Depends on your prescription, torics are more expensive, as are multi-focals.

£15 a month for monthly disposables with Vision Express and I cannot recommend them enough. I ended up developing a reaction to the normal solution they use and they were very efficient at swapping it to a gentler one

I recently ended up with a really bad scratch on my eye (to the point where the optometrist took a photo to show his colleagues it was that bad!) and they were worth their weight in gold, seen hours later and then several follow up appointments over the next couple of weeks and they were all free.

Free eye tests and free contact lens appointments and discounts off glasses.

optimisticpessimist01 · 22/08/2020 11:26

They also give me free replacement lens if I rip one and if I'm going on a European city break they give me a smaller solution for free to fit in my carry on

ScarMatty · 22/08/2020 11:28

£25 a month for dailies

Summer41 · 22/08/2020 11:37

£18.00 a month for monthly disposables, cases and cleaning solution from Spec Savers. This includes two yearly eye tests, yearly contact lenses check up and a discount on a pair of glasses every two years.

Unfortunately I cannot have daily lenses, they don't make them for my prescription.

Serafinaaa · 22/08/2020 11:44

£11 per month for daily disposables from spec savers. This is for only 10 pairs per month though. I'm happy to wear glasses most days. I also get a free pair of glasses every two years.

NastyBlouse · 22/08/2020 12:00

I can't get on with disposable lenses, I never found the vision quality to be very good.

Could you consider rigid gas permeable/RGP lenses? (I.e. ones that you take out and clean every night, and store in a little case.) They can take a bit longer to get used to than disposable lenses, but the vision quality is much better. And you can get both multifocal and bifocal RGP lenses.

Cost-wise, I pay about £180 for a set of lenses which will last me at least 18 months to two years. This cost includes lens aftercare. I also have to buy:

  • cleaning solution, which costs £6 and lasts about four months
  • storage solution, which costs £7.50 and lasts about six weeks.

Re glasses -- if your frames are acetate that might explain why they keep slipping. In general (my optician told me recently) metal frames keep their shape and fit better than acetate or plastic. I recently swapped to a pair of titanium frames and the difference is significant in terms of how well they stay on my face.

captainprincess · 22/08/2020 12:16

I've with Specsavers and I pay £10 a month. This includes 3 x lenses delivered every 3 months and includes a contact lens check and a sight check annually.

olivo · 22/08/2020 13:13

I think mine are about £25 a month for daily disposables. Had monthlies for many years but dailies suit me so much better ( no cleaning, easy for travelling etc, generally being lazy Grin)

RosieBdy · 22/08/2020 13:19

I pay about £25 per month for daily disposable lenses (I kept getting eye infections at the end of each month with monthly ones).
You might not need the more expensive varifocal lenses. I have one eye with a prescription for distance and the other eye with a prescription for reading. It sounds as if it wouldn't work, but it really does - just shows how clever our brains are!

MenaiMna · 22/08/2020 13:26

I buy 30prs/every two years toric disposable for special occasions and have to carry reading glasses for menus etc. With a "complex" varifocal prescription anyway specs always do a better job so I'd rather have three or four styles of frames to swap around from glasses direct (bogof and other vouchers can bring spend down from £300/pair to £175/two.)
For nose slippage have you tried nerdwax?

superstar63 · 22/08/2020 13:45

I also have multifocal and they cost me around £40 a month and they are daily disposable.

I shop around and use Quidco and can usually get them a little bit cheaper around £38 and use different places - whoever is cheapest.

NannyR · 22/08/2020 13:49

Thanks for the replies, I think my best bet is to go see an optician and see what kind of lenses I would need and take it from there. From those figures that people have quoted I could probably afford it.

Specsavers £13 per month for one pair that I wear for a month then throw.
Free checkups
Free eye tests
Discounted glasses
Really good Customer service

Champagneforeveryone · 22/08/2020 14:57

I pay just under £13 a month for daily disposables from DaySoft. However I have worn them for years and have an extremely straightforward prescription.

DS has just got monthly torics from spec savers and they are over £30 a month Shock

Waxonwaxoff0 · 22/08/2020 16:39

I pay £25 a month for mine. They're monthly ones, I'm short sighted so they're for distance only.

cwtchesandprosecco · 22/08/2020 16:41

I pay £18pm (including solution and lens case) for 30 day lenses. I also occasionally buy a box of disposable ones for holidays and they cost £15 for 15 pairs.

cwtchesandprosecco · 22/08/2020 16:42

Oh and I’m -6 incase that makes a difference. Never thought about whether the price would increase as the prescription changes. I also get a free pair of glasses (though have to pay to get the lenses thinned ) and aftercare.

ScarMatty · 22/08/2020 19:44

OP, I find vision direct to be the best value. So whatever to optician recommends I then go online and buy from vision direct
