Sick of feeling awful after drinking

I went to the pub last night and had 2.5 pints of ale, then went out for dinner and only had fizzy water. Today I feel tired, spaced out and have a faint headache. God its PATHETIC! This is a regular thing for me - I have 2 or 3 drinks, plus food, plus water, and yet can still really feel the booze the next day.

I'm 40 and this has been a thing for several years now. I dont want to go out on the lash, I just want to have 2-3 drinks, a couple of nights a week and not know about it the next day. I REALLY enjoy a drink and dont want to have to give it up. I eat really well and exercise, and drink plenty of water and I'm generally in good health. Can anyone relate, and does anyone have any advice? Thanks!

42 and I have such a bad headache and am exhausted from sharing a bottle of red last night with DH. I just want to cry! I have Becks Blue and need to just stick with that.

I was the same, until I read about taking Dioralyte sachets. These are to replace fluids after a bout of diarrhoea. I could not believe the impact! I take one before I drink, one before bed then another when I awake. No headaches at all. Unbelievable. I used to have a migraine and literally be sick all day long after just a few drinks. They are amazing. You can get supermarket cheaper alternatives, Asda's rehydration ones are fab.

Having said this, I've not had a drink since before lockdown..... I may well need more than Dioralyte for my next social event.

Thanks firecracker69, they're going on my shopping list!

This is a bit outing - but trust me- stick to European white wine; preferably French.
Much reduced hangovers.

crimsonlake · 21/08/2020 13:54

Definately going to try dioralyte.
I always forget to drink a load of water before bed as well.
For some of us it is not related to age as several posters have complained here that they have suffered badly from a young age.
I do agree with the holiday drinking, drink every night and you eventually do not get a hangover., unfortunately I have not had a holiday for several years.

Because my mean friends laugh at me about it all the time 😅

What is it about drinking that you like so much ?
The relaxation or the confidence boost or...?

BwanaMakubwa · 21/08/2020 14:32

Whoops name change fail! Even more outing lol...

ginandbearit · 21/08/2020 14:33

Used to be a big big beer monster and then went on to spirits a few years ago ..after one vodka session couldnt move for a day and a little voice in my head told me I had to make a choice about my drinking ..if i carried on as I was things would be bad .
I stopped totally for about ten years , now have the occasional gin and tonic , though had two bad experiences on different occasions, one a with a strong pale ale and another a sharp lemon cocktail where I had vertigo the next day..my eyes were bobbing all over the place apparently..sticking to gin and mineral water from now on and wary of that tbh.

I love the taste. I love the flavours in a good cocktail that I have mixed myself. I love matching wine or beer with food. I dont drink to get drunk, and I often go out for dinner and only drink fizzy water, but I love being able to have a drink or two when I fancy it. I really enjoy it, but I LOATHE and resent feeling shitty the next day

The flavours! Beer and wine are both delicious! There is literally nothing better than a cold pint of Bavarian weissbier or Czech pilsner on a hot summer’s day, or a pint of rich, hoppy English ale after long autumn walk to the pub.

Could not agree more! You're clearly a person of excellent taste Wink

Same here. Can you tell from my username that I keep powering through 🤦‍♀️😂

I was never one of those people who didn't get hangovers, but it used to be after drinking much more and nothing that a good fry up and coke couldn't fix. I'd usually be back to normal by lunch time.

Now if I have more than 3, I'll usually feel pretty awful for at least the following day.

I do get different types of hangovers depending on what I drink. Also they vary at different times of the month too. I'm very hormone lead 😔

I would try a different drink OP and see how you get on. You're like me, as it's your only real vice and so I do understand your reluctance to give up completely.

MagpiePi · 21/08/2020 16:31

I have found hangovers have got less as I have got older. I'm now perimenopausal, so my experience is the opposite to others.
I do seem to go through phases of being horrendously ill the next day after just a half of lager, or being able to drink a whole bottle of wine and being absolutely fine.
I also tend to wake up at about 3 or 4am after drinking, but I often wake up in the night anyway, so whatever! If I feel a bit headachey in the night I take paracetemol and tend to be fine the next day.

I stick to locally brewed proper ales rather than mass produced ones.

starsinyourpies · 21/08/2020 16:31

38 here and have cut out all but a very occasional glass of wine for this reason.

The80sweregreat · 21/08/2020 16:39

Around the age of 45 , I discovered that I can't drink that much anymore and now it's just one or two with food , if that!
I sleep better too if I don't have a drink.
