Reassure me about being called back for a Colposcopy for the second time.

Two years ago I had a smear which found HPV and abnormal cervical cells which resulted in going for a colposcopy at the hospital.

I remember dreading it but finding it was dealt with well and over quickly- they told me there and then it was fine and no further action needed.

So last week I had my next smear test and I’ve just had the letter to say again the presence of HPV and abnormal cells- ‘high-grade (severe) dyskaryosis’ and that I need a colposcopy again.

So naturally I am now extremely scared and worried Sad

I find I can’t talk to anyone at all about this in real life so I’ve came here to you lovely people.

Anyone had more than one colposcopy and it still be fine? Or should I prepare for the worst?

Did you have a biopsy at your first appointment at colposcopy?
I've no real advice, sorry, I'm just waiting on biopsy results and am a nervous wreck.
Nurse when carrying out my smear noticed an abnormal cervix so I was sent to colposcopy.
My lay-person thinking is that you will likely get a biopsy and possibly LEEP. I've read they can do this at the actual first appointment but I've also read that other people have to go back to a separate appointment for the procedure.
Sorry I'm not much help.
Wish you well.

Thank you @Spied and good luck for your results.
It’s really worrying when something like this happens.

My first colposcopy was fine and I needed no further action.

I’m most worried that the letter words it as ‘high grade’ and ‘severe’.

My hearts in my mouth

Colposcopy is just the viewing process. Whilst in there they can do a biopsy, LEEP, etc. Do you know what was done last time?

aShinyNewUsername · 20/08/2020 14:31

Thank you @eurochick

Last time they said it was fine and so there was no further action.

So this time having the letter again but with the words ‘severe’ on has knocked me for six and I’m really worried.

I've had 2 abnormal smears, 7 years apart, the first was moderate, I had Letz treatment, the second time was mild. I had a biopsy but not treatment.

I was told by the consultant that now I was in the system I would have an extra close eye on me and any, even tiny changes, from any of my smears from now on I would be called in for another colsposcopy. I felt very reassured by this but fully expect to be called in after every smear now. It is a worry at the time but I guess at least they are monitoring me carefully.

Mine is due to not being able to shake off HPV, the consultant said it probably flares up when I'm run down.

Hope it all goes well for you, I'm sure it'll be fine. Having spoken to friends and family I think it's much more common than we think.

Hi OP - I've had many many colposcopies. I had funny cells and my consultant wanted to monitor them so I had to go back for colposcopy and biopsy every 3 months, then went to every 6 months, 9, etc. Never had the procedure - it was never high enough grade and he said just the act of taking the biopsies was getting rid of some of the abnormal cells and normal cells were growing back in their place. But he took multiple biopsies every time.

To reassure you - only 1% of women who have abnormal cells at smear test actually have cancer. 99% chance you don't.

You will most likely be absolutely fine! And so many women have abnormal smears - I wish it was talked about more.

Thank you both. That’s reassuring to hear.

I think the fact it states that it is severe is what has knocked me.

I will just have to wait and see what happens when my appointment comes- eek.
