if i were to change my name, what should it be changed to?

my name is a flower, and i hate it. i think partly because, as pathetic as it sounds, i have far more bad memories than good memories linked to it. if i changed it, it would be just before a new 'chapter' in my life, as cringey as that sounds, where of course there will be bad experiences too, but it will hopefully be filled with happy memories too! i've never felt 'connected' to my name either. i'm thinking something short, but very beautiful and feminine Smile any suggestions?

I love Ana (and would pronounce it as you said), or Mia...

But I also love Poppy, it's a gorgeous name. I hope you love whatever you choose!

Regularname · 20/08/2020 15:38

I had a look at Korean names. Maybe a name that sounds the same even if it means something else. I wonder if Soo is close to Sue or not. (I do not speak Korean so don’t know the real pronunciation)
Maybe there are Korean speaking MNetters who could help if you start a thread.

If you are a Poppy, what about a name that preserves the beginning and end sounds but is more formal, eg Penelope or Persephone? Then anyone who couldn't bear to learn it, eg small child, elderly parent, could continue to call you Poppy but you could pass it off as a family nickname and insist that others call you by your longer name.

ElizabethinherGermanGarden · 20/08/2020 15:40

Sorry, I didn't read the bit about South Korea. Probably neither suggestion is easy to pronounce initially.

sugagii · 20/08/2020 15:47

thank you everyone! i am still stuck on ana, i really love it but i want to carry on looking in case there is an even better fitting name out there! thank you @Regularname for taking the time to look for some korean ones! i don't want to name myself anything too 'ethnic' iyswim, because i purely british, and the whitest of white, and i don't want to be seen as appropriating or trying to steal their culture, as although i'm going to be moving and living there, i'm aware i'm not and never will be korean, so i'd like to enjoy the culture but not claim it as my own iyswim Smile

i do quite like the name emmie, but it's quite a 'soft' name iyswimSmile
the others on my list are:
scarlet/scarlett (haven't decided on sp)
amber (loved it for a long time, but i think in a sense of for my future child, not for myself if that makes sense)
isla (pronounced i-la, really not sure about this one, think it's the same situation as amber)

@MeMyselfAye

How old are you op? I think it sounds better if you choose a name that ‘fits’ with that. I changed my name around 4 years ago, decided to keep the same initial to make signatures etc easier. No regrets, I forget I used to be called anything else now.

How did other people adapt to it?

Are you in contact with your parents and if so, how did they react?

Don’t want to ruin it for you but are you aware that ana is sometimes used as synonymous with anorexia? And Mia with bulimia.

sugagii · 20/08/2020 16:31

@CatherinedeBourgh i have a history of ed so am aware of that Sad might seem odd considering my history but it really is a beautiful name, and i'd hope not many people irl would know about the connotation Sad

CatherinedeBourgh · 20/08/2020 16:35

Fair enough. Just didn’t want you to change your name and then find out. Ana is just the Spanish spelling of Anna, so worldwide not an uncommon name.

sugagii · 20/08/2020 16:39

thank you for telling me though, i might not have known Smile
