Why do people love to sneer at McDonalds so much

FinnyStory · 19/08/2020 10:09

And blame them for obesity?

A Big Mac has 508 calories, a lot but not excessive if that's your lunch once in a while. A Costa Brie and Bacon panini has 517 calories, a no more satisfying or nutritionally valid choice surely?

In Prezzo, their hummus starter has over 600 calories! They have mains at over 1000 calories and their menu is similar to many other restaurants more acceptable to MNetters, which is why I looked them up, not because I have anything against Prezzo.

At least in McDonalds you can choose a salad or a lighter wrap if you want it, very many coffee shops and cafes don't even offer those things.

IMO McDonalds have made far more effort on these things than most and yet as soon as people talk about obesity, it won't be long before families who frequent McDonalds are vilified, although a gastropup or more upmarket restaurant chain seems to be considered OK?

@BogRollBOGOF

You've just assumed that's for one person when it could've been for 2/3

It is possible, but the presence of one fries makes it less likely that it was intended for multiple people, I explained that inferrence in the post. The point of the whole post was that it's down to what the consumer orders, not what is offered on the menu. You can order a salad and water for 250 calories or order multiple items beyond 2000 calories. McDonalds is no different to any other source of food in that regard.

Again, you're assuming. I've often ordered a burger for myself and a meal for my partner. Not everyone likes fries! You sound delightfully judgemental Hmm
chunkyrun · 19/08/2020 20:11

I never sneer at McDonalds, I bloody love it.

I also HATE the 'jokes' about people working at McDonalds. I could never look down on anyone with a job. Plus they work damn hard from what I see.

^^well said

@SisyphusAndTheRockOfUntidiness

I wouldn't eat anything from Macdonalds, Prezzo or Costa TBH. All the bread is vile, there's next to nothing fresh available (i.e. fruit & veg), it's all prepared & cooked ahead of time, & it's mostly full of highly refined carbs & fat, & low value protein. Very little fibre, little nutritional value (by which I mean vitamins & minerals).

I wouldn't call any of them a "treat", but I'm not forced to go in there & I don't judge people that do go in there, it's their choice.
I do silently judge people that feed their kids on that kind of food every day basically from toddler age without any other kinds of food, especially fresh food - not necessarily home cooked but at least sandwiches or something from a supermarket salad bar, or somewhere you can sit down & choose off a menu & get vegetables on the side as standard. But even then, I wouldn't say anything. It's not my business. It must be so difficult to have such a restricted diet that you can't cope with any food that isn't heavily processed. (I have a seriously restricted diet myself but I'll be damned before I'll pass any of that on to DD.)

It's NOT cooked ahead of time! They cook to order now.

They also serve some impressive salads and wraps.

Who said it's toxic? Are they putting arsenic on the chips now? Their food is no more toxic than say, organic apples. Grin
I love apples and eat them everyday, I eat a Maccy D's once in a blue moon, however, I don't think eating some junk food every once in a while is going to hurt most people.

Alwaysinpain · 19/08/2020 20:19

@Mancity100

I used to love mac d , but it's really processed food full of junk , same with kfc , Burger King, subway , 5 guys
No it really isn't! You've just made that up.

It's all organic and the beef is 100% British or Irish beef from their own farms and the chicken is 100% breast. The lettuce is fresh also. Yet you buy some mince from Tesco or wherever and think you're being all 'clean' by making your own burgers yet the chances are, there's traces of horsemeat (and other animals quite possibly also) in it! 🤣

Alwaysinpain
"It's all organic"

I simply cannot believe that everything McDonalds serves is organic.
Even McDonalds doesn't make that claim.

SilverOtter · 19/08/2020 20:35

Reading this thread is really making me want a McDonald's😋😂** It's been months since I last had one!

(Disclaimer - we eat McDonalds very infrequently, not because we are health freaks/snobs, but because it's difficult for us to get to)

user1497207191 · 19/08/2020 20:39

It's because McDonalds started the whole problem of high calorie, fast food.

Did you not notice all the fish & chip shops that were open in the decades before Mc Donalds then?

user1497207191 · 19/08/2020 20:41

@Blackcurrant66

I eat Macdonalds but the problem with it is not the meal itself. It’s the fact that it’s so cheap and easily available that it becomes tempting to eat it too often. There’s a correlation between having fast food outlets nearby and weight.

If these restaurants simply weren’t as accessible I’d definitely eat it less often and others would too

How is it different to all the council estates in the 80s that always had a fish & chip shop in the middle, where many people would go on a daily basis?
user1497207191 · 19/08/2020 20:43

"McDonalds were also conspicuously a source of litter - there was always more litter outside the McDonalds when you walked along the high street. I think the whole 'Keep Britain Tidy' campaign came along around the same time." FYI, the 'Keep Britain Tidy' campaign was instigated by the WI in 1955!

Funny how there is always lots of Greggs litter near to a Greggs shop, Costa cups near to Costa takeaways, fish & chip wrappers close to chippies. Why single out McDonalds? You see more McD litter because more people go there. In proportion to numbers of customers, their litter is probably similar to all the other litter sources.

catnidge · 19/08/2020 20:44

One of my DC has just applied for a job at McDonald's and I'll be very pleased for them if they get a job there.
I used to work in a supermarket and some customers were appallingly rude, with a horrible sneering attitude toward shop staff. I see that same attitude a lot on MN, where McDonald's is viewed as seen as Satan's arse and the staff as dim idiots with no future.
I do wonder how some people who think their kid eating a chicken nugget is poison, will cope if that child, in later years ever ingests pepsi, alcohol or other people's bodily fluidsGrin

Ifailed · 19/08/2020 21:13

No Penelope don't suck that dirty cock til mummy has disinfected it'.
unlike many FF places, where people walk in off the street and start eating their food with their fingers without washing them first?

DipSwimSwoosh · 19/08/2020 22:13

My main problem is that it's disgusting. We have occasionally stopped there on a long journey and the food really is horrible.

bookmum08 · 19/08/2020 22:20

DipSwim that's your opinion. On my local Facebook group practically every Sunday there will be pictures of the Sunday lunches people are getting from pubs. Personally I think they look revolting and if the picture includes gravy it makes me want to hurl.
But apparently traditional Sunday lunch us quite popular.
People like different things.

DipSwimSwoosh · 19/08/2020 22:30

Yes but the quality of a roast can vary a lot, as can the quality of a burger. McDonalds burgers are very thin and gritty and the buns are slidey.

Eng123 · 19/08/2020 22:34

I would point out that much of the McDonalds menu is stacked full of FAT, preservatives and colouring. Similarly the alternatives mentioned (Costa brie and bacon panini) are also junk! Seriously who eats this for lunch? On the other hand as an occasional treat it's ok in my opinion.

Eng123 · 19/08/2020 22:37

I think the other image problem McDonalds have is the litter. I once saw a family get up from a park bench and leave their litter all over the bench - bin was only 20 feet away too. It's this sort of behaviour that I associate with McDonalds though I know it's a minority.

ItsIslandTime · 19/08/2020 22:40

I love macdonalds wraps. If you chose the right ones and drop any mayo or cheese then they are low calorie and very tasty. Unfortunately the new grilled chicken patties are a lot less tasty than the old style grilled chicken.

I LOVE their coffee too.

haba · 19/08/2020 22:49

@Alwaysinpain I went on McDonald's UK website and looked at the provenance of their food. They do not claim any of it is organically produced. The eggs are free range, and the meat had red tractor mark, unless it's Irish, and that doesn't apply.
Red tractor mark still covers intensively farmed produce.

As you're so convinced mcd's has organic food please link to that evidence yourself!

haba · 19/08/2020 22:52

Apart from anything else, if McDonald's only used organic produce, it would cost the consumer 3 or 4 times what it currently costs for a McDonald's!
Organic meat and vegetables are extremely expensive!

haba · 19/08/2020 22:56

A quick Google tells me that the only organic produce McDonald's UK use is organic milk in some of their products, but not all products containing milk. Essentially tea, coffee, porridge and happy meal milk bottles.
So no, their meat isn't organically produced at all.

MsEllany · 19/08/2020 23:02

It is pure snobbery.

My children are very fit and healthy despite having McDonald's every so often since they were toddlers. It's quick and easy and cheap, I've always fed my children a balanced diet, 'naughty' food is included in that sometimes.

I AM fat however, and could murder a quarter pounder right now.

Emmmie · 19/08/2020 23:06

haba I've thought about what Alwaysinpain said regarding the organic food at McDonalds. She may have meant natural instead of organic. 🤷‍♀️

haba · 19/08/2020 23:11

Then why tell me to do my research and educate myself? At least I know what organically-produced food means...

JanewaysBun · 20/08/2020 10:02

McDonald's burgers are mega thin, it's basically a burger slice! Five guys is so much nicer and you get way more topping choice. Also prefer burger king burgers as they are more meaty
