Healthy breakfast ideas

I've always been at a bit of a loss with finding a healthy breakfast.

I try to avoid cardboardy cereal and wangy bread and don't really like anything too sweet. Almond croissants excepted of course. Some days DH makes soda bread, which is lovely, but I'm at a bit of a loss on other days, sort of roaming the kitchen like a cat whose owner has switched from Sheba to Tesco's own brand.

My kids don't have this trouble. DD has porridge every day, DS a smoked salmon and soft cheese wrap with a poached egg ( weird and moderately inconvenient, but he likes it)

Please share your easy, healthy breakfast ideas!

Greek yogurt
Frittata
Flourless muffins
Sliced meat / cheese

fruitpastille · 19/08/2020 08:30

Small bowl of granola
Smoothie of Greek yog, berries and spinach
Peanut butter on wholegrain toast

Camomila · 19/08/2020 08:56

I like greek yoghurt and fruit but don't find it filling enough so have it with a buttered bagel thin (and coffee obviously)

I love porridge with a large handful of frozen raspberries stirred in until they melt. I do add a squirt of golden syrup, but you can go without, for a healthier version!

sashh · 19/08/2020 09:05

I don't do milk so cereal is out. I sometimes have a porridge pot (yes I know there is dried milk in it) but often it's sliced boiled ham, a bit of cheese or a hard boiled egg and some bread.

Fruit and yoghurt

toast

I occasionally make a nasi goreng.

I have an aunt who makes a big batch of kegeree and freezes it in single portions for breakfast.

Ricekrispie22 · 19/08/2020 09:07

Rice cakes spread with peanut butter and banana slices
Bircher muesli/overnight oats
Orange, carrot and ginger smoothie

ThatBitch · 19/08/2020 09:08

I often make omlette with whatever veggies are hanging around thrown in. Kippers. Overnight oats with yoghurt and frozen berries. Porridge with frozen banana stirred in before cooking. Sometimes veggie soup if it's a cold gloomy morning. I don't really believe in foods just being breakfast foods so tend to have whatever I fancy. One of the dc regularly has vegetable curry and a paratha before school when it's cold and dark in the mornings 😂

dudsville · 19/08/2020 09:09

The only thing I find filling is eggs and toast. I chase it with an apple and coffee.

Ricekrispie22 · 19/08/2020 09:09

Almond butter and raspberry smoothie, made with oats and natural yogurt

ErrolTheDragon · 19/08/2020 09:11

Greek yog - or at the moment, homemade - with fruit (currently unsweetened homemade grape &blueberry compote) with a bit of unsweetened muesli on top, and/or nuts.

Pancakes (eg buckwheat, unsweetened) with aforementioned compote.

French toast - with cinnamon or can go savoury.

Cakestandkitchen · 19/08/2020 09:12

Scrambled egg on wholemeal toast.

rottiemum88 · 19/08/2020 09:25

I often make the little egg muffin things, just with a couple of eggs and maybe a bit of cheese/tomatoes/ham, then baked in a muffin tin for 10-15 minutes. Eggs are the only thing I find filling enough to keep me from snacking before lunchtime, though I'll top up on coffees throughout the morning

trappedsincesundaymorn · 19/08/2020 09:28

3 tablespoons of oats
3 tablespoons of plain yogurt
a handful of frozen fruit.

In a bowl, covered with clingfilm and left overnight is my go to healthy option.

LunaTheCat · 19/08/2020 09:34

ricekrispie yum! How do you make your smoothie?
I try to have eggs on very thin whole grain toast or the same toast with almond butter and sliced banana.

Bluewavescrashing · 19/08/2020 09:37

Natural yoghurt, stewed apples (really quick in the microwave), a few pecans. Nuts are filling.

Boiled egg and soldiers.

Beans on wholemeal toast.

Peanut butter on apple slices.

ErrolTheDragon · 19/08/2020 09:44

It's possible if you can't find things you want to eat for breakfast that you don't really want to eat anything yet. I sometimes really don't want anything till later so (if you're not out at work and it's practical) a brunch or waiting till lunch may suit you better. This isn't the same as 'skipping breakfast' and then scoffing biscuits or sugary muffins with coffee - if it's a deliberate choice that suits your body it's fine.

AHippoNamedBooBooButt · 19/08/2020 09:59

I have branflakes with a box of raisins on top with soya milk for breakfast.

EveryPlanetHasAYorkshire · 19/08/2020 10:03

Nut butter on toast for me. Cashew nut butter is the best but peanut butter is acceptable...and also cheaper.

Shoxfordian · 19/08/2020 10:03

Greek yoghurt and fruit

BoogleMcGroogle · 19/08/2020 10:04

Thanks all- some great ideas here. I like the idea of make-ahead stuff as I think that half the problem is roaming about not being bothered to prepare anything.

ErrolTheDragon- a few months ago I would have been sceptical about that, but I think you may have a point.

Yesterday, I had a long swim before getting breakfast at the gym and I'm sure I was more awake at work and wanted less for lunch. I've today just finished breakfast I put it off until after the dentist. I felt fine and just enjoyed peanut butter, a couple of oatcake and an apple. Normally I wouldn't eat that as breakfast as it doesn't feel breakfasty enough.

But the issue with not eating first thing is avoiding lattes and brownies in a rush at work. Maybe a mid morning wholemeal cheese scone is the way forward?

Anyone else need to eat later? Is this a common thing? Can it change with age I wonder?

I like Greek yoghurt with pecans and cinnamon - if the child had managed not to snaffle all the berries, I may add a few of them. I’m low carb and I do struggle with appropriate breakfasts and, as much as I love eggs, I can’t face them in the morning! I also sometimes make arrow root pancakes. Low carb toast with butter is a fave. Occasionally I’ll have porridge but have to add cream to make it filling and keep my blood sugars at a reasonable level and I top it with cinnamon, but this is a rare treat.

Could be - or oatcakes, PB and apple. Not that an unsweetened latte is a bad thing so long as you treat it more as food rather than drink - it's not fundamentally different to eating yogurt. Latte and an apple might suit some people I suppose.

I think it might be, only people get into the habit of eating by the clock and don't always pay sufficient attention to whether they're actually hungry. Not all cultures/historical periods have 'three meals a day' as a rule.

Happicuppa · 19/08/2020 11:08

A fried egg (using fry light) 1 piece wholemeal toast no butter, baked beans

KurriKawari · 19/08/2020 11:10

Weetabix
Banana and spinach smoothie
Overnight oats
Scrambled eggs, mushrooms, tomatoes and beans

agapanthus1979 · 19/08/2020 18:24

@sashh I LOVE a nasi brekkie!!
