Will people buy second hand car seats?

DS has grown out of his. It’s in great condition, it’s an extended rear facing one that swivels 360 degrees and the new version is £250. We’ve never had any sort of bump or accident.

I’ve listed it on local parent forums and FB for £50 but not a single enquiry. I would just like it to be used- it seems so wasteful just to chuck it, but is it possible that nobody will buy second hand ones because of worries about safety? The one we used when DS was a little baby was second hand but given to us by friends.

I would and I did. I knew the seller for one of them and the other one gave me a very plausible reason and I don't think she was BS me. Maybe she was but I don't believe so.

I wouldn't buy a second hand car seat, and would only use one from someone I knew. You're not meant to use them after about 6 years (I think) because the plastic degrades and it would no longer meet safety standards.

Yes, it's wasteful, but when you're talking about the life of a child it just doesn't matter.

Any I have given away have gone to grandparents for their cars.

I tend to go on facebook market places or local facebook groups, sometimes spock, preloved and ebay.

But my seat is safe. I was driving my own son around in it 3 weeks ago, and I know it hasn’t been in an accident. I’m not risking any child’s safety. As others have said, it’s a case of finding someone who would trust my word on this.

And I have a receipt to prove only 2 years old. And the manual.

It's about the worry though isn't it? You know you're a genuine seller, and its never been in an accident, but a buyer doesn't know that for a fact? And when it comes to baby/kiddie car seats there's not too many willing to take the risk for a knock down price. I'd personally ad on my own FB thread as it'll be people who 'know you', or offer to extended family/friends who can trust you as being genuine. Yes, it seems very wasteful but it's pretty understandable to be honest. I would personally rather pay the extra £xxx knowing DGC was 'safe' vs risking a bit of a 'bargain!', and I love Gumtree for a cheapo recycle 😁

It must just be your area, somebody listed a 360 car seat on my local FB page the other day and it went straight away. Also there's always people giving away car seats for free and they go quite quickly too.

Sometimes you need to be more patient, I sell lots of things on FB but many of my items have been listed for weeks before anybody buys them.

namesnamesnamesnames · 19/08/2020 09:26

I've always bought from friends if having a second hand one. We usually buy new though and have also sold/given to friends and people we know and who trust us when we say it's been looked after and never been in an accident.

SandieCheeks · 19/08/2020 09:31

I have bought second hand ones but only from people I absolutely trust.

I wouldn't buy one from a random on facebook, but I guess if someone is desperate enough they would. Rather risk it than not have a seat at all.

thebabessavedme · 19/08/2020 09:39

I have one I am very happy to give away, my dgs has grown out of it, its barely been used (used to take him to nursery twice a week) I have thought about putting a card in the local co-op, does anyone think that would be ok?

BeingATwatItsABingThing · 19/08/2020 10:51

You know this but others don’t. Someone else could try to sell a seat online knowing it’s been in an accident. They also said their seat was safe. How is a stranger meant to know only one of you is truthful? Maybe neither of you are truthful. Maybe you both are. It’s not a risk I’m willing to take.

Yes, absolutely agreed @BeingATwatItsABingThing.

I was more referencing some comments on this thread that seem to suggest I am endangering a child’s life by offering it for sale.

I think people would be more likely to take it for free (or for eg a charity donation). That way they know you’ve got no incentive to claim it wasn’t in an accident.

ShakeaHettyFeather · 19/08/2020 11:31

I find people give them away - then there's no incentive to lie that they've not been in an accident. I'd never try selling one (but did use a few that I'd been given).

Redhair23 · 19/08/2020 11:37

It seems so wasteful and bad for the environment but it’s drummed in to people not to buy second hand. Is there no one that you know and understands that you are an honest person that you could give it to?

fuckingcovid · 19/08/2020 11:41

Somewhere on the seat is a 'use by' date. The manufacturer puts it on the seat and you shouldn't sell it after that date.

Free cycle it if no one buys. I've bought second hand.

Scrumptiousbears · 19/08/2020 12:37

I sold my 360 for £50. I think it went on Gumtree.

OverTheRainbow88 · 19/08/2020 12:53

I passed mine on to a friend and relative who trusted that I was telling the truth that it had never been in an accident.

hedgehogger1 · 19/08/2020 13:02

Give it away? Women's refuge?
