Best non-toxic alternative to Jo Malone

I love Jo Malone candles but apparently they may be toxic? My friend says they emit harmful toxins akin to smoking indoors. Does anyone have any recommendations for non-toxic alternatives please? I’ve read online that bees wax are great, I like the sound of that!

Does your friend wear a tin-foil hat?

Well, I would ask her what proof she has that toxins are produced.

What does she mean by toxic?

Effectively all candles increase indoor pollution. This may or may not bother you. If you have asthma, you may find that any scented candle is not a nice cosy experience but a horrible asthma triggering experience.

Personally I find a scented candle a nasty migraine, asthma attack triggering experience. But I miss the times that I liked them and know most people don't feel the same way as me.

I believe Jo Malone candles are made with petroleum wax, which isn't great to burn and inhale. Look for soy wax candles with essential oils rather than fragrance oils. The Botanical Candle Company are lovely - check for ones with just essential oils. Be aware that the scent throw with petroleum based candles does tend to be stronger so soy ones may be a little gentler - but nicer in my opinion, strong ones give me a headache. I also have electric diffusers which are great and use pure aromatherapy oils in them.
Another nice thing once you start using your radiators again are the ceramic oil diffusers you hook over them. When they warm the essential oil fills the room.

Thanks all! I fancy beeswax candles I think after reading about their properties but I can’t find any big, multi wick ones yet.

LED candles are great - non toxic and no fire risk.

There is no truth in the endless newspaper articles saying that candles made from paraffin wax emit more toxins than soy or any other wax. It's a myth started by the American department of agriculture. They paid for a study to be done by south Carolina state university who came up with this. Further peer reviewed studies have since been done in Europe which debunk the south Carolina report and prove that there is very little difference in the emissions. The fragrance oils used in UK made candles are extremely safe and are used at safe levels. The same cannot be said for USA and Chinese made candles who use various components that are banned for use bh makers in the UK. For any of the emissions in UK made candles to negatively affect you, you would have to have hundreds of them burning in your home every day.
