Any doctors out there - are nice pens still a thing?

I'm looking for a special gift for a friend who is a GP. Do Drs still use posh pens? Someone told me it was a rite of passage to get a mont blanc (?) pen. But nobody writes anything now, so is this still a thing?
Thank you!

They still have to sign prescriptions so yes of course!!

SockQueen · 17/08/2020 21:15

Some do, some don't. I have a horrible habit of putting pens down and losing them so only but cheap biros but I know some like a nice fountain pen!

How2Help · 17/08/2020 21:15

Oh! I thought they were all sent to pharmacies electronically now. That’s good to know it would still get used, thanks. Definitely an option to look at then.

When DH had an appointment with the Head of Cardiology, we noticed he had a Mont Blanc pen!

A surgeon I work with has a Mont Blanc fountain pen - he guards it with his life

Not sure if you are a pen lover or not but don't forget to buy ink! Many fountain pens can be refilled (as you probably know) so the sky is the limit on colours. I really like the pilot iroshizuku ink sets as gifts as you get to choose more colours and it's considered some of the best colour range and quality out there.

(Sorry if you already know this I just really like fountain pens)

How2Help · 17/08/2020 21:51

Thanks all, very helpful.

WannabeMathematician thank you - I know nothing of pens. She would love coloured ink so will have a good look at that.

@How2Help No worries. I would also recommend looking at Pilot pens or Pelican pens as they are also very good quality without quite the price tag.

I would suggest going for a fine nib for a European manufactured pen (a Mont Blanc or Pelican) or a medium mob for a Japanese pen ( a Pilot). Some people prefer thicker nibs but it's generally easier to read the hand writing in finer sizes.

Ok I'll stop giving unsolicited advice now.

How2Help · 17/08/2020 22:48

Her writing is pretty legible for a Dr, but easier to read has to be a benefit! I’ll look at those options too, thanks.

Advice not at all unsolicited! Gratefully received!!! You are very knowledgable Smile

I have a Mont Blanc pen which I received as a gift from work (I am not a doctor but work in a role where I take a lot of notes!). It is very nice to write with and I would recommend one. Mine is engraved, I was very pleased to receive it Smile

Don't know about GPs, but it's practically a compulsory element of uniform for hospital consultants.
RoseTintedAtuin · 17/08/2020 23:13

Twisbi pens are good and not astonishingly expensive if it helps

Davros · 17/08/2020 23:30

I like Waterman pens

RAOK · 17/08/2020 23:34

My amazing GP has a paper diary and signs her letters. A pen is a lovely gift.

Mintychoc1 · 18/08/2020 00:17

I’m a GP and I used to love my ink pen, but now it’s all computerised and I practically never use it. I wouldn’t buy that as a gift unless you knew your friend was particularly into posh pens. It’s all electronic these days, especially in these times.
