How to go about becoming a dietitian with no qualifications?

Please be kind as it's a great source of disappointment for me. I wasn't interested at school and my mum didn't encourage me as "it's just a piece of paper". Consequently I left school with an English GCSE and nothing else.

I have a real interest in nutrition and would love to work in that field. Do you think it's possible at 35? Where would I start? Would I literally have to go through GCSEs, A levels then a degree or is there something I'm missing? If I literally have to start with GCSEs then that would be 5-6 years of study. I'm feeling like I've wasted my life and would love to turn it around before I get too old.

Many thanks

It could be possible to do an access course/foundation science course at a local college which then can lead into a dietetic degree programme/ our other AHP courses. Dietetics has a good proportion of people that come to dietetics later in life/ post children/ career change so its is not impossible to do.

It's a rewarding career.

You need to study an Access course - it needs to be Access to Science (not nursing or health and social care). You also need to study Maths GCSE alongside - have a look to see what your local Further Education College can offer. Also reserach Degrees in Dietetics and check the entry requirements - it will be GCSE Maths and English and check the type of Access qualification needed. Or you can look at going into Public Health/Health promotion - google some jobs to check the requirements.

I am a qualified Dietitian. Did my degree quite a few years ago! It does require a degree so start by looking at courses in your area (assuming you don't want to move) and working back from there. The course is very science heavy so if looking for the best route make sure there is sufficient biology and chemistry. Often unis ask for different qualifications from mature applicants with relevant experience, so it might be an idea to ask them for their opinions. Sorry I don't know much about access courses, I went straight from school. Make sure you find out as much as you can about the career as sometimes it is not what people expect. Most dietitians are employed in the NHS but there are many roles in the food industry and others. If you have any other questions please send me a message

The uni I attend offers this course with access via the foundation to health sciences. There are plenty of people older than your good self with limited qualifications who are performing brilliantly at degree level. You can do it! Good luck.
