Autumn - expectation vs reality

Every year I really look forward to autumn, the colours of the changing leaves, foraging for fruit, cosy jumpers and boots, hot chocolate, crisp mornings etc.

In reality it piddles with rain, I overdress and end up sweating. Novelty of school run and shiny shoes soon wears off. Christmas is suddenly everywhere from September. DCs refuse to cooperate on walks and sulk.

Maybe it's a grass-is-always-greener thing as I really look forward to spring too!

Last year we foraged for blackberries, ended up prickled to fuck and stained in purple juice. We did find a few blackberries to munch on.

Get the berries in asda. Cut your losses. This is real life, not Enid Blyton.

Oh, autumn is usually even better than I think it will be Grin🍁🍂

I like to make some things with the blackberries, like cakes and crumble and infused alcohol or jam/jelly. Gloves are your friends!

Maybe autumn is better in Scotland? It's not too warm for a jumper anyway 😂

Expectation: happy children kicking leaves

Reality : dog poo on wellies, trodden into the car 💩

Yes, I find it is. Mind you it usually starts in August and it's sunny and dry where I'm from so the crisp leaves are a reality.

Now I live in a miserable damp part of England where it's far too hot in summer then suddenly it turns cold and pisses down for 3 months then it's Christmas.

I always loved the idea of autumn and winter. The stereotypical aesthetic of the seasons but the reality was always awful.
My aunt lives in Maine I've visited a few times over the years now that's how autumn is done !!

I moved to Australia 4 years ago and sometimes miss the seasons but then I realise I miss the ideal stereotype of the seasons. Which the UK doesn't get. It's just grey drizzly damp gloominess and I never enjoyed it as much as I hoped I would.

I left the UK a few years ago and definitely miss having a cold Christmas but other than that, I’m very happy to have left the weather behind. I’m annoyingly someone who is hugely affected by the weather. Wish this wasn’t the case and I’ve tried hard to combat it over the years but to no avail.
I visited home last year for 3 weeks in October- November and I don’t think it stopped raining for a single day. So cloudy and so damp. Sometimes a good rainy day is nice but not incessantly. I miss a lot about the UK but the weather is something I am so relieved to have left behind me. The “ideal” of autumn is one thing reality is entirely different.

I blame global warming, I’m sure we had proper autumns when I was little. I remember going to the fireworks in my wellies and by the end my feet would be blocks of ice, a couple of years ago I was out trick or treating with DD in just a T-shirt. Autumn used to be cold and crisp, now it’s just warm and damp. The blackberries are already ripe where I am (SE), DD and I were picking them as we walked the dog earlier.

Lurkingforawhile · 17/08/2020 16:43

I know what you mean about being too hot. I have a lovely autumn outfit I was trying on last night, but thinking about it it will need to be below 10 degrees and I’ll need to be outside not to boil! Maybe I just need to go on holiday further north.

My childhood (80s) definitely felt like it had better defined seasons. Autumn was piles of dry leaves and conkers, you could see your breath by bonfire night.

Sounds magical 😂😂😂

Dry and sunny here too. I'm sure it's actually lovely where you are now 🥰
