Quick help - dinner dilemma

So DB and his family are coming to stay tonight on a spontaneous visit. Lovely but I am working all day and won't get home until about 6, shortly before they're due to arrive.

They'll be expecting dinner and although I can go shopping I'll have no time to prepare a meal.

What can I buy and throw together that Will suits adults and kids but not take long put together? My mind has gone totally blank and can't think past boring old salad Confused

I wouldn't stress about being boring. It's about the company, and the fun. I'd buy a couple of rotisserie chickens, two premade salads, lots of good fresh bread and butter, wine and beer, and a nice soft drink for the kids. A soft cheese to finish off the bread with, icecream for who ever wants it, and coffee.
Even most fussy kids will eat a chicken drum, or bread and butter.

Takeaway or chippy.

Or if you really don't want to do that:
Chicken and vegetable kebabs- buy ready diced chicken, then all you need to do is cut up some peppers, thread on button mushrooms or pineapple, maybe halloumi, shake with spices and stick under the grill for 15 minutes. Serve with pitta bread and ready made salad and shop bought houmous/tzatziki/olives. Most supermarkets sell ready made up kebabs too which would be even easier.

Rice noodle stir fry- we have it with tofu but you could use chicken, rice noodles only need boiling water pouring on them and soaking for 5 minutes and they are done. In the mean time fry the chicken and any vegetables. With some sesame oil, sweet chilli sauce or honey and soy sauce.

Pizza, Asda sell big fresh ready made ones and you could serve it with salad, garlic bread, onion rings, dips.

Fajitas? I always do a smaller pan with plain fillings for the fussy ones in my family, or if there are any really fussy kids you can offer chicken goujons/dippers to go in their wraps. Fajita mix, grated cheese, ready made quacamole, tin of refried beans or a bean salad, a bowl of tortilla chips, some salsa. Everything can be bought ready made.

Or a fresh pasta dish. Dry pasta will take too long but fresh pasta takes two minutes. Add a ready made pasta sauce and some garlic bread and a ready prepared salad. Quick and easy.
