I have to drive over Dartford crossing tomorrow and I hate that bridge

I need to drive over it as adds 1-2 hours to our journey if I don't
However i am still awake worrying about it.

Years ago I drove over it as one of the last cars before they closed due to high winds and I've never forgotten the sensation of the wind aginst the car.

The though fills me w dread

Amazing - I always thought the Dartford Crossing was a tunnel 😂😂😂

PastMyBestBeforeDate · 17/08/2020 01:19

It used to be but then they built the bridge and used both tunnels for northbound traffic.

@Enko what was your passage of choice in the end?

We did the bridge I counted down fro 10000 got to 9953 but fairly sure I did the 50s twice.

DD2 (age 20) sung along to the music and told me I was doing so good. We got home at 9 am. I am exhausted we have been travelling since Saturday 11 am British time. had an overnight stay in Hamburg. DD1 Had to suddenly take a flight home due to the Netherlands being added to the list of countries not possible to visit. We didn't even pit stop in the Netherlands but we will still have to quarantine for 2 weeks.

The weather slowly got worse and worse the closer to the ferry we got. We started off in North of Denmark in 30C and finished in The Netherlands with lightning and rain pelting it down that fast I had to have the windscreen wipers on full speed. (Something I rarely need to do)

We were asked to show a passport at the border but not for the filled-in form (it is filled in)

England greeted us with fog and quite dull weather but at least the rain held off.

The car seemed so empty as we set off and all the way home. We left 4 and returned 2 (my youngest daughter will be spending the next 3 years in Denmark doing an International Bachelorette living with my sister)

Highly recommend Little Women on audiobook for any who are doing a similar length trip. it took us there and to just before the Dartford crossing back.

I am SO tired but also feel very proud of myself for having driven that far.

Thank you for the support and reassurances everyone. I will be seeing a counsellor so this is something I can continue to do.

It's a bridge southbound, tunnel northbound. The traffic moves better since they got rid of the booths where you had to queue at a barrier.

Having an account is good, and you get a discount too. The biggest problem is the traffic jams, especially northbound (tunnel), because so many important roads come together just before the tunnel, and some large vehicles have to be escorted through, which means the tunnel is then briefly closed to everybody else.

Well done OP! Good for you for persevering 😊

Franticbutterfly · 17/08/2020 23:33

Keep to the left. I always do.

Starksforthewin · 18/08/2020 09:07

Congrats, OP. You are fantastic driving all that way and back. It’s clear to me that you are a confident driver who just has that one issue about that bridge!
I’m the same. It’s my driving ‘weakness’. Those conditions in the Netherlands sound grim but you didn’t bat an eyelid! 😀👏👏👏

Thanks for clarifying everyone! Bridge one way, tunnel the other - got it!
