What's the single best thing you've ever done (or bought) to improve how you look?

Bit of a shallow one perhaps, but I'm looking a bit matronly and old before my time these days, thanks to toddler & lack of sleep. My hair and nails were wrecked due to pregnancy - I was really unwell with hypermesis- and haven't really recovered. Toddler is two now and we're having no more children, so it's time to focus on myself a bit. I'm also crap at doing my hair so have entered the wonderful world of YouTube tutorials

So throw it at me- what's the best thing you've done?

I think it depends on what is bothering you the most?

Last year I had my brows microbladed which makes me look groomed even when make up free.

This year it was getting new bras via boob or bust measurement. Gone from a 34DD to a 32F and I look so much better- perky despite DC and no double boobs.

@OhYeahYouSuck

Roaccutane. Got rid of the permanent acne on the chin and around my nose and now my skin ia fab and I don't need foundation.

I also get my hair dyed. It's pretty glossy and always looks healthy. Eyebrow wax (usually), nice moisturiser and my nails are always long and nicely shaped. I also have learned to dress for me in the things I like, that suit my shape. It makes a huge difference and people have told me I always look nice in my clothes.

Ok, not 1 thing, but these are my staples. The roaccutane was the best thing I ever did and I wish I hadn't waited until my late 30s to do it!

Same for me, I was on roaccutane. The dermatologist kept asking about my mood in the monthly check ups and I kept saying they are making me feel better because I love my skin now. Best thing I ever did!!

Surprised (and envious) at those who say losing weight has helped- I went from borderline obese to bang on perfect BMI and I've aged a decade Sad I remember when I was young someone older telling me that when you reach a certain age, you pick face or body. A fuller figure will mean less lines on your face, a slim figure will mean clothes hang better but you'll look a bit older. I'm annoyed at how true this is for me.

Weight for me too - I wasn't hugely overweight but it was getting me down. Went from 83 to 60ish kg, I'm 5'7.

Clothes, once the weight had stabilised. I have a sense of what suits me and buy it again and again, basically.

Tiny exercise sessions - so, for example, as soon as my DH and DD leave for nursery I do push ups to tone my arms. I'm up to 50 now, from an initial 10.

@itsamadmadworld what are these gel socks I'm intrigued

dayswithaY · 17/08/2020 07:48

Hyaluronic Acid - it really plumps up my face. Research skin care - don't just buy products that look nice or are easily available.

A pair of really good trainers.
I felt obliged to actually use them to start running after DH had gone to such great expense.

Utterly transformative.

I've just ordered the Hollywood browzer, it's just what I've been looking for!

A really well fitting bra and big knickers are what make me look and feel better!

I agree with PP about prioritising your sleep above all though. That's where your initial focus should be.

zebrapig · 17/08/2020 10:44

Similar boat here, DS is 2.5 so some sleep would help the bags under my eyes but it might be a while before we crack that one. I lost 3.5 stone before having him but have put 2.5 back on, really need to lose it again as it helped how I felt about myself so much.

My treat now is getting my nails done; I get some me time and it makes me smile every time I look at them. I get compliments on them sometimes too which is always a confidence boost.

Great! Make sure you persevere a week. After the first time i used it I got quite spotty but it doesn't last long
