Unusual reaction to mosquito bites, or are they something else? Pics

Our toddler seems to react very oddly to mosquito bites, they seem to blister up quite large before popping and refilling a few times. Our 8 yr old does similar, but not to the same extent.

Others seem to go white with a red circle round of they don't seem itchy though?

Could they be flea bites?

The first pic on the second post is identical to how I react op. I stick a blister plaster on and leave it on till it comes off on it’s own. I have had antibiotics a handful of times but usually only when the whole thing reaches the size of my palm. I also take quite a strong antihistamine for them, not to stop the itching but to reduce the swelling & spread.

We have a flea issue atm (almost under control hopefully) and dd2 always reacts really badly to the bites (she is the only one that gets bit and they swell) and they look very much like the flea bites she gets.

Are these mosquito bites in the UK?

I used to get the same as you've shown as a child when going abroad. Very painful. Used to use calamine lotion on them but not sure if it's recommended now.

IndecentFeminist · 16/08/2020 16:55

Yes, we're in the UK. I haven't seen any fleas anywhere, I'll check the dog. 🤔 None of the rest of us have had any. He doesn't seem phased by them which is odd.

I react like that too, my arms are now horrendously scarred as well.

I get bitten by mossies here in UK (started about 10 years ago) and I react like that OP.

Rowenberryjelly · 16/08/2020 19:21

Could he have been bitten by ticks? Toddlers brush past low vegetation which makes them more prone. If you've been out in the countryside please show the gp the pictures with the rings around and ask about lymes disease which is spread by ticks. If caught early it is a course of antibiotics, if left it can have serious longer term consequences and a bullseye rash around an insect bite is a classic sign.

Rowenberryjelly · 16/08/2020 19:23

Actually I don't think the rash is typical of that, but something to be aware of if you are out and about.

My sons looks very similar. He has 2 on his arm. I'm not entirely sure what bit him but it was day time at the park. Maybe an ant or mozzie. Anyway it's been over 6 months and it hasn't gone away. It sometimes reduces and looks grey and flat and I think its healing and they it looks red and raised and blister like again. But it's hard. I have tried to pop to see if it would heal but nothing seemed to come out and it hasnt gone away yet. Has your childs bites healed now and what made them go away? I can try take a photo of my boys if that helps

DobbyTheHouseElk · 22/04/2021 07:15

That’s how I react. I need antibiotics sometimes. Big yellow blister and huge red swelling. Very unattractive and painful.

Howshouldibehave · 22/04/2021 07:16

Has your childs bites healed now

Let’s hope so; it was 8 months ago!

OpusAnglicanum · 22/04/2021 07:17

Yes, had that as a child with bites, less bad nowadays.
