Do you let your children mix up the play dog colours

Just wondering what other people do.

I was firmly in the no mixing colours, only one colour pot at a time. This worked until DS has now turned 3 and it's all slowly being mushed together. It's making me twitch but he seems to be having more fun with it, making rainbows etc

I don’t ‘let’ them
But it always happens 😟
Either that or it dries out.

Moonsand has been way better for us

SandieCheeks · 16/08/2020 15:05

Er... it's a toy for children, why are you getting so involved Confused

angelopal · 16/08/2020 15:07

That's the fun for mine mixing up the colours. They probably wouldn't in play with it if limited to one pot at a time.

TwilightPeace · 16/08/2020 15:14

Yeah, it’ll happen eventually so I let them crack on. As long as they enjoy it, don’t interfere.

Smallsteps88 · 16/08/2020 15:18

Wow!

That is extremely uptight OP!

Do you know what play doh is for? It’s for playing with. Being creative, experimenting, learning what happens when you squish different colours together, finding out that no matter which colours you smush, the result is always brown play doh. Please don’t restrict your child’s play so much. That’s not healthy .

Fatted · 16/08/2020 15:18

I try to keep them separate but they end up getting mixed up anyway. I tend to buy a few new tubs every so often because the older ones dry out and chuck out the mixed up ones then. My kids like mixing up the colours then complain when it all looks like sludge.

victoriasponge678 · 16/08/2020 15:19

OMG opening a new tub of perfect playdoh is great, and then I have to share it with the kids !!!!!

I don't like them mixing them but inevitably they do.

sanityisamyth · 16/08/2020 15:20

I'm allergic to benzaldehyde so the smell of proper Play Doh makes me pass out. Decent enough excuse to never have the vile stuff in the house. Stops it all going brown when it's mushed you, and being trodden into the carpet!! Win Win!!

EssentialHummus · 16/08/2020 15:24

I felt like that at first but you have to go with it really.

Motherofmonsters · 16/08/2020 15:24

Smallsteps88 - don't worry it's now on the way to a brown mush, I've let him get on with it now.

The colours are just so bright and nice, it's sad to see them go to brown

buy your own secret mum set of play doh and keep them separate Grin

wellerhugs5 · 16/08/2020 15:27

Lol, this makes me twitchy as well. However, they truly don't care about mixing and ending up with lots of tubs of brown play doh which they happily play with. I think that i get twitchy because if I were to join in, I would want separate colours to make my masterpiece more authentic 🤣. I just let them get on with it now Smile

Killerqueen2244 · 16/08/2020 15:30

Yes!! I try not to care but the colours are lovely when they’re new then when they start getting rolled together I do get a twitch!! I wish they’d just sell browny/grey sludge colour so I wouldn’t care!!!

Elieza · 16/08/2020 15:30

My pals mum made her own. It was always pale blue for some reason. She probably didn’t like the chemicals in the shop bought ones or something. So no problems with colour mixing if you only have one!

It was a bit bland though!

chubbyhotchoc · 16/08/2020 19:15

I don't buy it as hate the stuff. If they get gifted it I attempt to keep the colours separated but doesn't work.

JanewaysBun · 16/08/2020 19:31

DS is 2 so I'm currently able to strictly enforce separwte colours ahah

bilbodog · 16/08/2020 19:31

FFS - how are your children ever going to learn To do their own thing if you are controlling how they play with playdoh!!! Of course they are going to mix it up!

Do you all have nervous breakdowns if they make a boat out of the lego kit that is supposed to make a helicopter??

And breathe..........

EchoLimaYankee · 16/08/2020 21:27

Oops I do this. I now realise I’ve been a bit ridiculous Blush. Thanks for the reality check!

gonewiththerain · 16/08/2020 21:40

I don’t like the colours being mixed. I give only two colours out at a time. I also don’t like it drying out. I find play dough one of the more stressful toys.
The early learning soft stuff dries out quicker than play dough. When the bought stuff runs out I’m just going to make a few different colours. It doesn’t bother me if the homemade stuff is mixed together or dries out.

Fyzz · 16/08/2020 21:44

I used to make it. Vast quantities in different colours. It was less annoying when it all got mixed up I used to bin it and make fresh.

BillyAndTheSillies · 16/08/2020 21:49

I used to, but now DS just gets his play doh box out willy nilly and does what he wants with the colours.

He did receive a construction set that had brown play doh in it. Covered in glitter. It was awful and naturally DH made pooh shaped rolls which amused them both no end.

homemadecommunistrussia · 16/08/2020 22:16

I came here wondering what a play dog was

It sounded cute.Grin

DennisTMenace · 16/08/2020 22:29

Nope, one pot each at a time and no mixing. I regifted the one nice set we were given as there would have been no point in attempting to get them making the shapes. Don't give a monkey's how creative they are with the lego sets, or how much mud they get covered with outside.

Kreacheriscleaning · 16/08/2020 22:39

My 3!year old is very particular about her play dough is kept separate and in the right pots. Smile

Cam2020 · 16/08/2020 22:41

Yes, I let my daughter mix, colours. It's fun and she likes experimenting with the colours. I only ever get the small tubs - they're easily replaceable.
