Weekly? Fortnightly? Delivery?

We both work fulltime and 2 young dc both will be packed lunch in September. . Trying to avoid the top up shops between deliveries. Does weekly deliveries work ?

I do a big shop every 5 days for 2 of us, but top up at local Tesco express for fruit/salad/veg. Never have it delivered as I have the time to go shopping.

PersonManWomanCameraTV · 15/08/2020 09:56

Same here - kids having packed lunches for first time ever.

I have a Tesco delivery pass and find that instead of one big order a week (which I inevitably forget to add a few things to) I get two smaller orders a week, one Monday morning and one towards the end of the week. I find it easier to get everything I need and avoid top ups that way.

Me and my partner both have the app on our phone and so tend to just add things throughout the week as we realise what's needed.

starlingsintheslipstream · 15/08/2020 09:58

Weekly online shop since Covid. Works OK. Also think I probably spend less overall. I have milk from the milkman and always need to pop into the local garage for bread later in the week. And a fortnightly Gousto box. If I had a bigger freezer think I could manage to go the week without topping up. I meal plan so try to be quite organised.

Piixxiiee · 15/08/2020 10:34

Thankyou! I work in a school so I'm off at moment but I'm trying to think ahead to the chaos of September. I think organization, meal prep and weekly shops are the way to go. I've got the app on my phone so think I'll buy a pass and do it weekly.

Weekly online shop here. Usually a Wednesday when I get in from work (I work mornings & early afternoon in a school), atm I'm in the house a lot more so not fussed what time slot I get.

I have a list on the table - as someone finishes something, it goes on there. Specific meal requests go on there. Then I top it up to include 7 meals, and fruit and salad, and anything like washing powder/liquid.

I always try and include a couple of easy meals to either chuck in the slow cooker just before I leave (6:40am) or that cook in half an hour ish in the oven.

Piixxiiee · 15/08/2020 10:58

@lucysmam yes this is what I need to do! Thankyou

Online once a month for stocking up on things like cat food, cat litter, washing powder, big bottles of drinks etc. Anything that is a bit of a pain to lug home because we don't drive.

In store shop once a week for fresh stuff and light things. I meal plan 2 weeks ahead and make sure we always have some quick options in.

WanderingMilly · 15/08/2020 11:14

Weekly for groceries, and in store. Not keen on online shopping, I like to browse (yes, even the food!) and choose my own and happy to wear masks.
Will use Amazon for a one-off item that needs delivering, eg. bought a new washing machine recently and can't just fit one of those in the car boot. Otherwise I much prefer shopping in store.

JamieFrasersSassenach · 15/08/2020 12:19

Once a week in Aldi and then a Tesco click and collect in the middle of the week for top ups/things I can't get in Aldi.
I try to meal plan so I only buy what I need (well that's the idea anyway!)

cultkid · 15/08/2020 12:48

Sort of every 5-6 days online from Ocado

Soo expensive

OhTheRoses · 15/08/2020 12:55

Monthly delivery: cleaning stuff, tins, cat food, tea, coffee, cereal, oil, pasta, rice, water, drinks, beers, bathroom stuff, etc.

Weekly: fresh stuff and what we need.

Daily: quick top ups bread, milk, salad etc.

lucysmam · 15/08/2020 19:28

@Piixxiiee it makes my life a little bit easier & I just transfer it over on a Monday after work (or in between jobs at school sometimes, if I have time) .

If they don't add something and my psychic powers don't tell me they need that specific thing Hmm they have to go for it themselves (or 10yo dd2 convince dd1 that she needs to take her to the shop Grin ).

It works well most of the time, although this week's list is looking very sparse atm so they'll get a quick reminder at tea time tomorrow that they need to add things or not get them.

lucysmam · 15/08/2020 19:29

Should have said as well; I have both Asda and Tesco accounts, I decide where each week based on contents of list.

IHaveBrilloHair · 15/08/2020 19:30

Once a week online.

LightAsTheBreeze · 15/08/2020 19:36

Weekly Tesco shop online, I have a delivery saver pass, top up shop from M&S or Waitrose for treats and stuff that Tesco doesn’t sell. Bulk buy from Amazon of toilets rolls and other household goods when on offer.

I could get by with just the Tesco shop though if I had to

Stillinbedat10am · 15/08/2020 19:42

Weekly in store. On Friday evenings I write a meal plan for the week ahead and then list everything I need for those meals. I then add lunch and breakfast items, extras, cleaning supplies, toiletries, pet supplies, etc to the list. Once I have done this I go into the kitchen and check the cupboards, fridge and freezer, crossing anything I already have off the list.

Then I am up early on Saturday morning and in the supermarket when they open. Back out within 30 minutes.

DH walks through a supermarket on the way to his bus home at the end of the day and now the queuing has gone down he can generally pick up anything we have run out of and still make his bus. When the queues were bad I was lucky because my mum shops midweek and loves just down the road from me so she would speak to me the day she went and pick up anything I was running short on. I would then do the same for her on Saturdays.

mosscarpet · 15/08/2020 21:08

I have shopped on line for years, but recent events have made me tighten up really. I work full time (NHS.) DH also works full time (teacher). 6 dc so time very limited. Currently using a combinatin of:
milk delivery form local farm 3 times a week.
Fruit and veg box once a week
Toilet roll subscription every 8 weeks
cleaning products stocked up when on offer from amazon
meat etc from supermarket delivery roughly every 10 days
tins/cooking ingredients/cereal etc form amazon prime stocked up when on offer or when needed
very very occassionally me or DH will have to go to an actual shop!!

we have amazon alexa and dc know to add things to the shopping list which I alwys check when placing any online order (ds - 12- obviously thinks things like "Alexa , add nintendo switch to the shopping list" are hillarious, but easy to ignore ! ) Grin

KitchenDancefloor · 16/08/2020 11:28

Online weekly plus top ups

To avoid top ups in term time we buy more bread, make the sandwiches in advance and freeze them for packed lunches, and also freeze milk.

I hate doing the sandwiches at the weekend but my weekday self is very grateful to weekend self.

MsSquiz · 16/08/2020 11:32

We get a weekly delivery from Tesco, with the occasional top up of things we've forgotten from the local supermarkets (waitrose or co op), we also get a Gousto box for 2 or 3 meals a week.

Before lockdown, we would get 2 smaller deliveries from Tesco per week

Piixxiiee · 16/08/2020 13:09

@KitchenDancefloor great idea. I'll do that.

Not even considered amazon for bulk bits so thanks for that I'll have a look.

I'm determined to be organised and spend less time at the end of the day with tired kids trying to cook or decide what to eat etc when theres more to life. So weekly deliveries, food prep, slow cooker are the way to go. Dh may be wfh sometimes too so that should help.

Ghostlyglow · 16/08/2020 13:11

Weekly delivery since covid etc. We alternate between Iceland (who I only discovered really during lockdown when they were the only one I could get a delivery from and they are brilliant) and Tesco or Asda. We used to use Sainsburys before this but they totally let us down during lockdown even though we had used them for over 10 years and DP used to work there.

sitckmansladylove · 16/08/2020 13:40

In term time I shop on a Sunday usually and do a big shop. I put bread in the freezer and buy lots of yoghurt etc. I tend to buy things like crackers in bulk from Tesco (favourite crackers). Top up with milk in the local shop. We use a lot of milk.
It's handy to have custard pots and other long life items for lunches in the cupboard. Saves a late night trip out.
