6 year old bed time

What time does your 6 year old go to bed on -

School nights?
Friday nights?
weekends?
School holidays?
lockdown?

Do you mix it up or stick to the same time every night?

My 6 year old has a routine so that he understands when it's a school night, weekend, school holiday and Fridays!
School night - 8pm
Weekends - 9pm
School holidays - 8pm
Friday's I actually try and keep him up as my youngest takes up so much of my time (he's clingy bless him) but try a spend some quality time with my 6 year old just me and him, but he always falls asleep by 9pm
Now during lockdown, it's that's same as Fridays, he just doesn't last past 9pm
Some nights he can stay awake untill 10pm but no matter what time he goes bed he always (since lockdown anyways) wakes up at 9am depending if his little brother gets to him, then it's 6am lol
What about your 6 year old? I'm assuming that's why you asked
Hope my response was helpful Smile

greendress789 · 16/08/2020 21:39

Thanks that was useful!

Mine is -

School nights 8-8.30
Friday nights 9-10
weekends 9-10
School holidays 9-10
lockdown 9-10

Thinking I need to have more consistency as it's too late? He's just turned 6.

School Nights 7:30 (lights out at 8) Fridays are the same as they have clubs at 9:30 on a Saturday.

Holidays 8-8:30 ish depending on what we are doing so they can stay up till later 9 maybe if we are out for a meal or something but earlier if we have been on a long walk or similar.

Lockdown- same as school time as they were either in key workers childcare or doing school work in the morning.

They are always up at 7-7:30 makes zero difference when I put them down unless they have done something mega energetic the previous day.

7:30-8 usually. We try to be consistent with that no matter what day it is or she gets grumpy. Occasionally it’s more like 8:30-9 though if something is happening.

WhatwouldRuthdo · 16/08/2020 21:49

7.30-7.45 generally. He’s up between 6-6.30am regardless of when he goes to bed so needs to go then.

Kittykat93 · 16/08/2020 21:50

I think 10pm is way too late for a six year old!

SomeHalfHumanCreatureThing · 16/08/2020 21:52

Mine goes to bed at 7:30-8:00 most nights, but will normally read for at least half an hour. I don't know exactly what time he turns his light off, but it's before 9pm.

TorysSuckRevokeArticle50 · 16/08/2020 22:00

DD goes to bed at 7pm, will usually read or colour for 15-30 minutes then she's asleep.

Friday nights we let her stay up 'as late as she likes' in practice she says she wants to go up at about 8pm and is asleep for 8.30pm.

Regardless of what time she goes to sleep or if she's had a bad night she is up at 6am every single day.

We've tried doing several weeks in a row of later nights to get her to stay in bed later in the morning but it doesn't work and she just ends up sleep deprived so we've accepted she's an early bird and that's that.

SomethingNastyInTheBallPool · 16/08/2020 23:03

7-7.30, every day unless there’s something special happening. She’s usually pretty pooped by then. Last night, she didn’t get to bed until about 9.30, by which point she was almost hysterical with tiredness and completely overwrought. She’s been grumpy all day today because she didn’t get enough sleep.

Boystobump3 · 17/08/2020 02:05

7pm school nights due to been so tired after school, & autistic

7:30pm weekends but Sunday if school next day 7pm gives time to get to sleep 😴

7:30/8pm holidays

greendress789 · 17/08/2020 13:45

Thanks everyone. Everything has been pushed back/forward (never know which one is which!) due to lockdown so taking back control from last night and getting the routine back in order.

Thanks all!

I think I must be mean as my 4 and 7 year olds go to bed at 7pm whatever! Occasionally if we are on holiday or had a long day trip it will be later but not often. If my DD7 isnt tired she has to read in her room until she is.

Theorangeorange · 17/08/2020 14:12

7-7.30 for my 6 year old, we stick to this most nights unless it's a special occasion and occasionally she'll have an extra hour on the weekend but more often than not she's ready for bed.

Drivingdownthe101 · 17/08/2020 14:15

My 6 and 5 year olds go at 7.30pm. 5 year old tends to go straight to sleep, 6 year old reads for half an hour but knows her reading light has to be off at 8pm.
Will probably bring it forward half an hour when they’re back at school as they don’t get up until about 7.45am at the moment and we’ll be cutting it fine for leaving the house at 8.15am.

ritzbiscuits · 17/08/2020 14:27

Bedtime is the same every night, I want my evenings! He goes up between 7-7.30 and then reads independently up to 8.30-9pm.

When he's back at school it's likely we'll do lights off at 8.30.

MumOfTwoBoyssss · 17/08/2020 18:35

Here's a question

Does any of your 6 year olds have naps still?
Mine refused naps at 3 years old, my litter brother who is 6 and same age as my son has two naps a day according to my dad.

Drivingdownthe101 · 17/08/2020 18:36

No. Mine all stopped napping before they were 2.

BeingATwatItsABingThing · 17/08/2020 19:53

If my 6yo had a nap, I wouldn’t be able to get her to sleep at night. She doesn’t even sleep in the car if it’s not after her bedtime. She wouldn’t be able to nap at school so I don’t want her to be reliant on that.

Drivingdownthe101 · 17/08/2020 19:54

Yes, we drove 6 hours to Cornwall recently and my 6 year old didn’t fall to sleep at all.
Neither did the 1 year old but that’s another story Grin

Pamelaaaaa · 17/08/2020 20:00

7.15. Doesn't matter what day of the week it is. Occasionally for whatever reason she'll end up up later if it gets past 8 she will crash.

SirSamuelVimesBlackboardMonito · 17/08/2020 20:04

7.00 - 7.30 most nights. Official bedtime is at seven but that's usually when we are going upstairs, so roughly half past when shutting the door.

Friday is sometimes a bit later as we tend to do pizza and film night on Friday, but not past 8.

If she's on holiday, including visiting family overnight, we let her be up until 10pm at the latest, but only if we are out somewhere - not just in the house.

She likes & needs sleep. Taught secondary for years and kids with very late bedtimes more often than not were less good at regulation of their emotions and less able to concentrate. I also am thinking ahead - one of the privileges of getting older is staying up later. If she has a 9 or 10pm bedtime at 6, what time will it be aged 8, 10, 12?

Finally - DH and I get some child free time in the evening, which is very valued!

User56770987 · 17/08/2020 20:08

Every night start bedtime any time between 7 and 7.30. Usually sleeping by 8.

If we are out somewhere for dinner, visiting or watching a movie in the holidays or weekends it might be later but very rarely after 9.

In saying that he's up 6 am on the dot regardless of bedtime so he needs his sleep at the evening time . He's always happy to go to bed then and is out like a light.

greendress789 · 17/08/2020 20:22

No he doesn't nap - occasionally will drop off in the car on a long journey but not regularly.

Start bedtime at 6:30. Asleep by 7 usually

chubbyhotchoc · 17/08/2020 22:54

Posted too soon. If we go out for tea or something else might be a bit later but later than 8pm would be unusual.
