drink water?
was reading a thread about it and it made me think.
back in the 70's when I was at school, I think we just had a drink at lunch time and that was it.

Never.

Water was available at lunch time only. No drinking water in the classroom or breaktimes.

Warm milk in infant department which was rarely drunk.
A water fountain in the playground of the junior department, which was more used for splashing than drinking. No inside fountain.
Secondary, we had water jugs on the lunch table and a sink in the common room with beakers.
Rarely drank during the day. We didn’t snack at primary either. Lunch was the only time we ate.
At secondary we were given a drink and homemade cake or fruit between school and prep.

Only at recess or lunch. Although everyone brought a packed lunch from infants school onwards, I don't recall anyone bringing their own drinks in. There were a couple of bubblers (water fountains) in the playground, which you could drink from during break time and that's it. No one was allowed to eat or drink during class time.

My mother was born just after WWII and remembers all primary school school children being given a little individual bottle of milk to drink every day at recess - which had been sitting out in the sun since the milkman delivered it at about 6am. She said it was always hot and tasted revolting, but they all had to drink it...seems to have done wonders for her bones though!

The milk was available up to and including secondary age until Margaret Thatcher (aka milk snatcher) took it away.

When I worked in London it was still available in primary, at least until the late 80s when I left. I went to Derbyshire where there was nothing until it was reinstated for under 5s sometime in the 90s, I think.

In primary school we had a sink in each classroom. It was both for everyone washing their hands before lunchtime, and for drinks for anyone who got thirsty. So yes, I suppose I must have sometimes drank water? Can't say I have any specific memories about it. No sinks in secondary school. We had water fountains in the corridor, but those always seemed nasty and unhygienic to me, so I think I'd rather have drank for a bathroom tap if I'd had to. I don't remember ever carrying a water bottle, or any other drink bottle, with me at any point, though.

A water fountain in the playground. Milk at 11am ish and those weird metallic jugs of water on the table at lunchtime.

MissClementine · 14/08/2020 20:14

We had milk at break, water jug and glasses on the tables at lunch and a water fountain by the toilets.

Primary school in the 70s: 1/3rd pint bottle of milk mid-morning, and a water jug on the table (shared amongst eight) during the school lunch. I don't remember water fountains at primary at all.

Secondary school in the 80s: two water fountains - one in the girls quadrangle and one in the boys (so we didn't have to share). Jugs of water available on the tables in the canteen, if you ate lunch there. I used to bring a tupperware beaker of squash with my packed lunch, and ate/drank outside.

I don't really remember drinking at home either though. If the summer was very hot, we'd get one bottle of fizzy Corona delivered, that would last a week. When visiting grandparents I was offered (warm) lemonade when the adults had coffee, that was a treat. I remember I'd down a half-pint of water after our evening dinner. But I don't remember any other drinks, and certainly carrying a water bottle has only entered my life in the last ten years.

I was unsure what this thread was about until I realised ... Shock children have water avail to drink at school all day? We just had a drink of squash brought from home as break time and then at lunch.

I have three school aged DCs. They take water to school. But now I realise why they carry water with them all day on non-school days. Is this also why millennials always carry water bottles around?

Shamp · 15/08/2020 17:34

90s to early 2000s. We were allowed drinks in lessons. At lunch time water jugs on the table and on Fridays it was orange squash.

WokusPocus · 15/08/2020 17:38

I don't remember drinking water at school apart from at lunch. I do remember being incredibly thirsty when I came in from school - especially in the summer!

ExclamationPerfume · 15/08/2020 17:44

Milk at breaktime until Margaret Thatcher stopped funding it. Then a flask of squash at lunchtime.

Heatherjayne1972 · 15/08/2020 17:48

No water fountains at school - primary or secondary
You had whatever drink was in your packed lunch or I suppose the school provided water for the school dinners but it wasn’t a ‘thing’
Even on the hottest day
Although I do remember a sports day when it was very hot and the kids got one little cup of squash ( sun cream wasn’t a thing either then)

EggsFried · 15/08/2020 18:12

I didn't drink much at primary school (late 90s to early 00s)- just a small carton of juice in my lunchbox each day. There were jugs of water on the tables at lunchtime but no one ever used them as people used to spit in them. I can't remember drinks being available at any other times.

Near the beginning of secondary school we weren't allowed to drink inside the building except in the canteen- I can remember one girl being told off for drinking from a bottle of water in the classroom at break time and being told to take it outside. By about Year 10 though (mid 00s) the rules had totally changed and we were allowed bottles of water on our desks during lessons. I'm glad that times have changed and children are allowed water at school now- I drink water all day at work and can't imagine it being restricted!

bendmeoverbackwards · 16/08/2020 18:03

Primary school in early 80s.

We had a metal jug on the table at lunch with blue or green plastic beakers. But once it was empty that was it! I remember being thirsty after my half full beaker of water but it never occurred to any of the children to ask for more water.

We had water fountains outside, they were used after doing outdoor PE on hot days. Massive queues for them and while you had your turn drinking, the other children would count out loud loudly up to 10, at which point your turn was over!
