Curly/Wavy hair type question.

Ok so.. question!

My hair is kinda wavy, but when it gets wet or humid, it curls in ringlets.. only when i shower and then brush and blow dry, its straight.

If i let it dry naturally without brushing, wavy/curly, if i brush, straightish.

How do i get my hair to dry with the curls in without it being all knotty?

My daughter says comb conditioner through it in the shower.

Use some curl cream/mousse and dry with a diffuser

I would second this. I have naturally wavy VERY thick hair. No amount of fancy shampoo, spray, oil, helps but I can tame it to nice waves by doing this with a wide tooth comb.

Scrunch when wet to encourage the curl, don't brush - use a very wide toothed comb.

tabulahrasa · 14/08/2020 12:42

Stop brushing it and blow drying it, lol.

I comb mine while I’m washing it, then not after that at all, then scrunch product in while it’s still soaking wet. I also don’t rub it with a towel, I either scrunch it or plop it up in cotton. Then either leave it to dry or use a diffuser.

Interesting point about not using a towel tabulahrasa, I heard that drying with towels causes damage and increases the frizz. Someone recommended I try microfibre towels instead - I have ordered one so will report back if it makes a difference!

Google the curly girl method and try that. It's confusing at first but it does work.

I got one of these and it's great for plopping - it's microfibre, keeps all my hair out of the way while I'm getting the rest of me dried, moisturised and dressed and when I take it off after about ten minutes my hair's damp. The only downside is that it takes a long time to dry but it'll be better in winter when I can leave it on a radiator. There are several similar ones on Amazon and eBay.

“heard that drying with towels causes damage and increases the frizz.”

It’s supposed to... dunno tbh...

I know with mine it’s more that my hair curls, but the curls are... delicate? They lose structure really easily, left to its own devices it’s a bit wavy with loads of frizz, if I protect the curl while it dries I get actual curls.

My daughter, she has very ringlety long hair, dries hers with an old t shirt. She scrunches partially dry with a diffuser and then leaves it. Her hair isn’t too thick so she just uses her fingers in the shower to comb conditioner through. She also sleeps on a silk pillow case. She uses some sort of gel product to hold the curls. It never gets brushed.

IhateBoswell · 14/08/2020 13:27

Never brush, even when it’s wet. Put your conditioner on and run your fingers through it, if you feel any tangles, work them loose. Wrap your hair in a T-shirt to dry.
Apply some product (I like the Cantu coconut cream) and softly scrunch the curls, separating some of the larger coils.
If you do diffuse it, only use the cool setting as heat could cause frizz.

Shizzlestix · 14/08/2020 14:36

Soak, wrap in a towel while you cleanse your face etc, put on conditioner, as thick as you can find, Tresemme is good. Comb it through, don’t dry.

MadeleineMaxwell · 14/08/2020 14:49

Wide-toothed comb, gently dry with towel (don't rub, just pull the towel along the hair), use this mousse, curl some strands around your finger, diffuse upside down for a minute or two (I do high heat, medium blast setting), leave the rest to dry naturally.

I've tried all the silk pillow cases stuff and none of it works for me. I also find Cantu terrible, it leaves this weird crispy white residue on my hair.

I have curly hair - I comb conditioner through when it's wet, rinse and then comb mousse through - then leave it.

I've just been going through this with DD this morning who has gorgeous long wavy hair - we've got all the right products and can get beautiful curls after washing it, but what do you do on days you aren't washing it? If she brushes it the curls lose definition and it goes frizzy, if she doesn't brush it it gets matted and messy.

AlwaysLatte · 14/08/2020 15:21

I wash and condition every day, comb conditioner through it every day. Wrap towel around it while I get dried/body moisturise then spray it with leave in conditioner, comb it through and leave it to dry. Gently separate curls with fingers when dry. No way can I ever comb or brush it when dry or it just frizzes.

AlwaysLatte · 14/08/2020 15:22

Oh the thing with the towels too, if you use one don't rub dry! Just blot it then wrap towel around for a few mins.

I have to wash mine everyday for this reason!

I sleep with a buff on - it’s hugely attractive Blush lol

But, it means I just take it off in the morning and I’m good to go.

Other people pineapple it up in a clip or bobble and just refresh it a bit with water.
