Paid isolation after a holiday?

I just find it really hard to equate the thinking in this.

If you can afford 2/3k for a holiday knowing the restrictions and quarantine were a possibility you chose to take the risk.

I don't buy people weren't aware they would have to quarantine on return because their country was green on departure.

Obviously for some it really isn't an issue because they are self employed or can and do WFH.

Where have these people been?

My concern lies with the families who are working zero hours contract on NMW jobs who will have to isolate and need the income just for a roof and food and can only dream of having a holiday?

Just wondered what others thoughts were on this?

I am torn because for lots of people who have worked in frontline roles since the start of covid, a holiday is really needed.

I had a holiday booked in January to France, leaving tomorrow. We cancelled back in May when we could still get a refund because I'm a nurse and I knew I would be letting down colleagues if I needed to quarantine. In July I started to regret the decision but now feel vindicated obviously.

I am in desperate need of a break though having worked full time + extra since February so we are having a short UK city break before coming back for the hell that is GCSE day.

Holidays are a luxury but for those that have faced real challenges through this pandemic, they are also vital for mental health and well being.

I absolutely cannot imagine what those on frontline went through and I don't think anyone ever will.

Thankyou 🌈

But the point is you made a calculated decision based on risk and have got some holiday which I'm sure you need.

My issue is with those who take the calculated risk and then shout about the government enforcing quarantine and they should paid.

Hence my comment about unless you travelled from another planet for your trip you knew there was a pandemic and you knew there was a chance if quarantine.

Enjoy your trip and I hope it gives you the chance to relax that you deserve.

On Channel 5 news at 5pm a holidaymaker said he thought it was better that there were more local lockdowns like the one in Leicester rather than holidaymakers having to quarantine.
There are some who think the cost should be borne by those "lower down the scale"

@itsgettingweird

Katy Bell from TUc was on itv this morning saying people should be laid because government is forcing the quarantine on them.

Well they chose to go to France. The possibility quarantine on return wasn't exactly an unknown.

It was a unknown if there would definitely be a quarantine but the choice was yours whether to take the risk or not!

entirely agree, sadly these folk seems to be fuck wits

I disagree. Breaks from work are very much needed. Breaks overseas are not needed, front line or not.

I've been working all the way through. Including home teaching until now.

Guess what, I'm having my break now. In the UK. At home. We've gone on lots of walks. Paddling pool out. Picnics.
Different to usual. But nonetheless a break.

I booked my holiday and paid for the flights in January
I’ve saved through the year to pay the balance for my accommodation
I can’t afford to not be paid for 2 weeks on my return but if I cancel them I lose my money as the flight is still going ahead. I also face having no holiday insurance as the government advice is not to travel
I’m screwed whatever I do
All because I’m going to menorca which has a lower infection rate than the uk

I am really concerned by the children returning to school who are still on holiday with their families. They won't isolate and I'm not sure what enforcement (if any) the schools will have. My child will be in that class and hasn't been away. I think someone also mentioned earlier about teachers not doing it either.

Does anyone know what they are going to do? Send their children back or keep them at home?

Those who booked long before Covid 19 restrictions I have sympathy for. If they booked with Ryanair for their flights they may not get their money back (or for a long time), their accommodation may not refund them.

Those caught out by the short notice for Spain I have similar sympathy for- France was expected though should have been announced two days earlier.

My workplace has been very clear that you cannot expect to be paid if you now go somewhere and quarantine comes into force.

Takeittotheboss · 17/08/2020 12:28

I think there should be a policy of support from the Government to the employers so that people can quarantine safely without worrying about finances and risk of losing their job.
Quarantine has been introduced at very short notice in some cases. It is equivalent to households having to self-isolate after a member of the household showing symptoms of Covid-19 after a trip to the supermarket or an UK holiday. The Government is supporting those people so should support those returning from abroad.

Takeittotheboss · 17/08/2020 12:30

By the way, not all people caught out by the sudden introduction of quarantine from European countries were there for a jolly summer holiday......there are other reasons people travel!

IceCreamAndCandyfloss · 17/08/2020 12:35

I agree support should be in place for those that travelled for funerals or sick relatives but not for holidays or just a normal visit to see friends/family as it’s a choice. Many chose not too. Those that did took the risk and that’s not down to their employers to pay.

Obviously if the travel was for work and paid for by the employers then so should quarantine.
