Well, glad we didn't book anything.
Camping in the Dales will be fine....won't it?

Well that's one way of putting it.

Hope people can get any refunds they might be due

Yes, and I don't envy those trying to make it back.

littlefireseverywhere · 13/08/2020 23:13

God, we do nearly booked Malta. Something just didn’t quite feel right though, so sorry for everyone who’s booked.

Illegitiminoncarborundum · 13/08/2020 23:15

Something tells me this government wants us to spend our money here...

Jason118 · 13/08/2020 23:16

What money?Smile

Illegitiminoncarborundum · 13/08/2020 23:16

@Jason118

Good point well made.

TheGreatWave · 13/08/2020 23:28

Thankfully my colleague went last week and is now back. (To see family)

rorty · 13/08/2020 23:34

I think this was likely to happen but the government were probably lobbied hard by the travel industry to create these air bridges. This way at least some money was spent & some holidays happened.

saltycat · 13/08/2020 23:37

Benidorm is fkd though, none of us are going there lol. Sorry now.

I know it is a marmite place, but having seen the series Benidorm I can only associate it with mobility scooters and mad people. It was very entertaining though.

But I am a total snob lol.

Am staying put this year, actually wrote it off mid May or something. Not worth the hassle anymore. But holiday season is nearly over now anyway and those who survived will be fine, those who hunger for foreign hols will really have to decide for themselves.

Obviously I didn't and won't go abroad. Who is with me?

chomalungma · 14/08/2020 06:02

Apparently 500,000 UK tourists are thought to be in France at the moment.

Which seems like a lot, given the pandemic.

"Something just didn’t quite feel right though"

Would that be the massive pandemic that's going on, perhaps?

Imissmoominmama · 14/08/2020 06:07

Tbh, I’ve been surprised at friends who’ve booked holidays abroad. Just stay here for now- it’s not a necessity!

And I say that as someone who usually spends the entire summer in France.

Leflic · 14/08/2020 06:11

Is anyone actually getting fined for non quarantine though?

Is it up to your work to shop you if you turn up next week even though they think you’ve come back from France? What happens if they let you work?

AlternativePerspective · 14/08/2020 06:12

No sympathy here for anyone who seemingly jumped on the first plane out of here for a foreign holiday and is now stuck there.

And no, “the government said it was ok” isn’t a good enough reason to do it, people have lost all common sense. There’s a pandemic going on, let’s face it, the France figures have been rising for the past week and the outcome here was on the cards and yet people still went.

taybert · 14/08/2020 06:59

But lots of people booked those holidays pre pandemic and had no way of getting any money back as the advice stood. It’s ok saying “have a UK holiday” but UK holidays aren’t cheap (or actually even very available) and if you’ve already spent your holiday budget it’s a bit gutting to lose that money and not even get a holiday, most families can’t afford to pay twice.

We were supposed to go to France on Saturday and are in this position. We had already decided not to go as I didn’t think it would be relaxing but we’re pretty fed up. We’ve been to work and our house since March, we’ve followed every rule. My husband has continued to work full time from home, whilst looking after our children and taking a 20% pay cut whilst I’ve been going out to work. We all need a break. I can completely understand why people took the risk.

All common sense and clearly all empathy and feeling as well.

There's a pandemic on

When is that going to stop being said? When there are 0 cases?

SummerNamechangeHappened · 14/08/2020 07:07

Oh ffs I would feel MUCH safer in the middle of the french countryside than I do in London. Thinking we may still go (booked next week) and just accept the quarantine 🤷🏼‍♀️

chomalungma · 14/08/2020 07:33

I have also been working as usual (like many people) and we had planned to go to Spain. (camping).

Luckily we had only paid a deposit for the ferry so have just transferred that for later.

I thought about France - but as you said, it didn't seem like it would be relaxing a holiday as usual.

So we've put a foreign holiday on hold, staying at home and doing some UK camping instead. Just keeping an eye on the forecasts at the moment.

Probably when it is no longer classed as a pandemic, just a guess.

HopelessSemantics · 14/08/2020 07:48

"I would feel MUCH safer in the middle of the french countryside than I do in London."

And how about the inhabitants of the French countryside? Do you think they want someone from London there right now?

I don't think the numbers actually put it in pandemic territory any more do they? I feel like I've seen an article about this.

I don't know how many British people are usually in France in August, but this year it's probably boosted because it is somewhere that many people can get to by driving, so no need to fly and deal with airports.

Also people swapping from Portugal and might be seen as safer than Spain and Italy.

Something tells me this government wants us to spend our money here

But there simply isn't the capacity, everywhere is booked up and could have probably filled their spaces 3/4 times over. For a lot of people, who've lost their overseas holiday, they're not able to have a holiday at all this year. Plus of course, many don't have the money or are cutting back to build some savings so can't or won't spend on non-essentials.
