Anyone had their CV done professionally

Hello1290 · 13/08/2020 17:52

I am job hunting at the moment and considering getting my CV written professionally. Has anyone else done this and was it worthwhile? I notice some jobs nowadays don't accept CV's but rather ask you to tell them why you would be suitable for the role. Could this be to eliminate the professional CV's. Or are their any books which give CV templates that anyone can recommend?

Supposedly done by a professional who was in the employment agency. They were crap. I had to re do it.

Unfortunately a lot of the books with advice on CVs and Applications are American. Different styles to UK.

urgghh I paid for a professional service and it was crap. full of typos, grammatical errors and clearly written by someone who had zero experience in my field. I complained and got some bullshit back about 'this is how successful CVs are written'

I would not pay for this. The results are usually rubbish...

There are charities/organisations that can help you with your CV for free. I used to run a project in London where we helped women go back to employment, training or education and that is one of the services we provided for free. Local authorities also often employability support for residents where you can get help with a CV/application forms.

Or you might just want to register with an employment agency in your particular field and they can usually give suggestions on how to improve your CV as part of the registration process.

I also had one done which was absolute bollocks. Not worth it. Do you have any friends in management jobs who could help?

AriettyHomily · 14/08/2020 14:20

If you are going through agencies they generally but your info into their own standardised template to go to the employer so not worth it IMO and the agency's should help you write it anyway

Professional CV companies often outsource to India to compete on cost which results in someone barely able to read English (the talented English speaking grads aren’t interested in shit jobs like this) producing a nice looking but ultimately useless CV.

You are better off using the American aimed websites to get advice and create something that suits each role you apply for.

Probably not a good idea then. Requin - thanks for the tip about LA possibly offering something I will look into this.
