Apologies for the terrible photo, it was taken through a window - but can anyone tell what kind of bird this is?

I've noticed him in the garden a lot over past couple of days, sitting on the swing etc. Today he has been sat on my patio, almost sheltering next to the slide. Now he has gone right under the kids slide and I can just see him peeking out. He's been there for ages.

I'm not sure what to do in this situation, obviously don't want to frighten him.

Thanks in advance

Think he looks like a baby robin? They're usually quite nosey and quite friendly. The spots on his chest will gradually turn to red and robins can have more than one nest per year if they've found a lovely place to nest!

Robins LOVE mealworms. I look after injured bats so usually have live mealworms in the house. The robins in my garden are so tame and know that when I go outside, they're usually guaranteed some tasty treats Smile

I think a baby robin, too.

Thanks all. I sent the same photo to my mum and she seemed to think possibly a baby owl? I do hear owls at night time.

I'm worried about a cat getting to him (I don't have cats but neighbours do). He's hidden himself right under the slide and not moving much.

I don't have any meal worms to hand but is there anything I should be doing to help him, or is it best to leave him be? I'm worrying about him now!

I know that some birds (Blackbirds) have a defence that if the nest is raided / disturbed before they are ready to fledge, they tumble out of the nest and stay nearby, where the parents feed them.

Can you put some water down? It's been quite hot so I'd put some nearby. In regards to food, it depends how old he / she is. If it has fledged, it should be fine as it can fly away but probably stays close by for the time being...... If it's not fledged then I'd try and ensure no predator can get to it. If it's already survived in your garden for the last 2 days, it suggests it's OK and not too young to know what danger is and knows what to do at night?

If you don't have mealworms, have you for any bird food / fat balls you could potentially put on the floor? When you go out, does it stay there or hide? If the former, it may still be quite young and need protecting as much as possible.

We had baby Blackbirds in the garden this year -they all fell out the nest when a Magpie raided it. Two survived, one died and the one that died was just too young and just stood still when I walked up to it Sad

I just went out to put a saucer of water and a bit of food - he just stayed very still, but has just tucked himself further away under the slide. Suspect I'm not going to sleep a wink tonight, will be on cat watch!

Definitely not an owl, its a passerine fledgling of some sort, both robin and dunnock are good shouts, hard to tell from pic. Can it fly at all/any sign of parents. If it's been around days it's somehow getting food.

I'm relieved...I just looked up from my work & he was sat on the fence, just outside my window, and then hopped into the bushes.

Am glad he can move a bit! Wonder if he'll be back. He was sat really still on the patio right outside my window for hours which has never happened before, so was worrying he was injured.

Thanks all
