Baby sleeping bags v tight around neck?

My baby is 5 weeks and weighed 8lbs at birth. I have tried out the baby sleeping bags from John Lewis, Mamas & Papas and Grobag, but the neck is always far too tight. I know they have to be small to ensure the baby doesn't slip down inside, but they are sooo small they seem to be choking him and look really uncomfortable so tight around his neck. Has anyone else found this? Can anyone recommend baby sleeping bags with slightly less tight necks, or with adaptable necks or anything?

If I remember correctly, sleeping bags aren't recommended for babies this young? I also wouldn't be using them ATM. Mine were both born in the spring followed by really hot summers. We didn't use sleeping bags with either until they were closer to six months old.

Do you have the sleeping bags that zip up to the front, or ones that zip up at the side and have poppers for the 'sleeves' at the top? I found the ones that zipped to the side were a bit roomier around the neck

That's not the current advice - NHS and Lullaby Trust recommend them, as long as they are the correct size and tog.

I'm not using it at the moment as it's too hot. This is a broader a question for when the weather gets cooler.

Yes, we are using a side zip one as the front zip ones I tried had the look of choking him and the zip digging into his neck.

My 9 week old uses gro snugs and the tommee tipee versions. Both fine around her neck and she's the 50th centile. Have you tried them?

Seconding grobags and tommy tippee although they do look a little snug round the neck! I did start my 9 week old off in newborn sized but have moved her to 0-6 months from about six weeks (she's around 75th percentile) as the newborn ones weren't long enough. Recommend them tho - DS wouldn't wear them and the number of nights we were replacing blankets was tiresome.

My second is now 6months and we used the Grosnugs with her right at the beginning, they were great and had adjustable arm holes too with poppers to make the armholes smaller if needed.

I had the same issue with my LO & found that the sleeping bags from Sainsbury's were the best fit for us so they're the only ones I use now!

The guidance used to be to use them from 10lbs+ . Not sure when that changed.

I had this with my baby - his had two poppers either side so I'd button two up on one side and only one on the other. If you're aware of making sure they can't slip down it then it should be fine

I use asda ones with 11 week old. The neck is snug but I've checked and it'd be as tight as his pj's so I've stopped obsessing.

Yes! My baby was in the third percentile & we had bought two ‘purflo sleeping bags’. Worst investment ever. They are both so tight around the neck! I’ve woken to her having difficulty breathing because the neck part was restricting her airways. I would love to use a sleeping bag, but now I’m so paranoid & anxious. Can’t use a blanket, can’t sleep with her on/next to me, can only layer her up to an extent. Not sure if other sleeping bags are the same - but the purflo ones wouldn’t recommend at all!
