Is this ok to wear for an interview?

I have an interview today. It is going to be very hot and humid. In the previous round of interviews, I wore a suit jacket and trousers with a smart top, and I was very hot and uncomfortable. That was on a cooler day and I ended up with visible sweat patches. The office itself was very hot with lots of glass.

I only realised when I got there that it is a casual wear workplace, so I was dressed more smartly than the interviewers, though they said that they do sometimes choose to dress more smartly and people can if they wish.

I am thinking of wearing a black jersey dress with a tie on the waist. It is below the knee and has a wide scoop neckline along the collar bone, so not revealing at all, but is still casual. Would you wear it to the interview given the casual dress code and heat? I know it seems obvious that it should be fine but I’m a bit nervous and second guessing myself.

I think you look lovely, very best of luck.

TheBlueStocking · 12/08/2020 11:15

I think the dress is absolutely fine. It's absolutely boiling and I'd personally struggle to concentrate during an interview if I was sweating.

GOOD LUCK!!!! 🤞🏻 You really do look great. Young and skinny.

I’d say it’s fine esp if you wear the jacket through the door - if you see what I mean.

MrsWobble3 · 12/08/2020 11:21

I think the dress/jacket is perfect for what you describe so I would wear it with confidence and without a second thought. Good luck with the interview.

BogRollBOGOF · 12/08/2020 11:24

I wear jersey dresses for interviews i don't wear jackets. I get anxious enough about interviews without wearing garments that are hideously uncomfortable even in regular weather. If an employer is startchy enough to care then we are not compatble anyway.

As this place is relaxed anyway, roll with it.

Choochoose · 12/08/2020 11:25

I think it looks ideal for an interview in this weather. As the dress code is casual, although going a bit smarter for an interview is sensible, it definitely looks like it fits the bill.

seadreaming2020 · 12/08/2020 11:26

I’ve interviewed tonnes of people in a very smart corporate environment. You look absolutely fine in that dress. Do not mention it, no need to apologise or explain. The interviewers should be interested in what you have to say not what you’re wearing.

UnfinishedSymphon · 12/08/2020 11:26

The outfit is perfect, lots of luck

RainbowFlowers · 12/08/2020 11:27

I think because its dark it makes it look smarter. Good luck!

The interviewers are in trainers etc! I think you'd be showing good sensitivity to the workplace culture by stepping down the formality. Dress is absolutely fine. I wouldn't mention it though unless it comes up.

GisAFag · 12/08/2020 11:47

Dress and jacket look lovely. Put the jacket on just as you get there. Take deodorant and spray before putting on jacket. Minimal makeup. Bottle of water. Tissue to wipe sweat off.
Always dress smarter for interviews.

I went for internal promotion and wore a long sleeve dress to cover arm tattoos even though panel know i dont normally cover them and i wesr leggings with dresses but wore tights and smart shoes.. I got back to work and got changed into normal clothes.

Good luck, kick arse

SleepingStandingUp · 12/08/2020 12:17

Ah I was imagining something much thicker, that looks fine. Good luck

QueSera · 12/08/2020 14:18

I would definitely wear a jacket. Even in the heat. I would always err on the side of more formality than less. Good luck in the interview.

IncrediblySadToo · 12/08/2020 14:22

Frankly, anything more than a bikini today & you're going to over dressed!

You'll be fine in your dress (you do not need tights & a jacket). You discussed the dress standard last time, you'll look like you listened & took it on board ABD you still look smarter than them win/win

Good luck getting the job!!

OchonAgusOchonO · 12/08/2020 14:24

@Supertree

Ok. I think I’ll go for it and just explain the outfit choice at the start. Given the way they talked about clothing last time, I‘m hoping they’ll be fine with it.
Don't explain. The dress looks fine. If you explain, you're immediately putting yourself on the back foot and drawing attention to a lack of confidence.

In a casual workplace, nobody is going to take your clothes into account unless they are completely inappropriate.

KingaRoo · 12/08/2020 14:30

It looks great with the jacket and in this heat they won't question you taking it off. I agree don't mention it, it sounds as though you are lacking in confidence if you ask for their permission for what you are wearing. Its not as if you can change once you're there anyway! I do a fair amount of interviews and it would put me off if someone mentioned what they are wearing or asked if its OK. It would make me think they would need hand-holding at work and not be proactive/decisive.

Wear it with confidence and think no more about it. Hope it goes well OP.

RosieLemonade · 12/08/2020 16:10

@elf1985

I always go with the rule, wear what you would for the job just slightly smarter
How is that a rule? That could mean literally anything.
Knittedfairies · 12/08/2020 16:22

That looks fine! How did the interview go OP?

Supertree · 12/08/2020 18:57

Thanks all, I took the jacket off as soon as I got there and the interviewers didn’t even see it. I made no mention of my clothing and the interviewers were dressed more casually so it was fine. It seemed to go well, I have the usual analysing of what I could have done better or should have said but I’ll just have to wait and see.

If you have anything scarf-like that works it would look good if you took the jacket off. And (or maybe this is just me) if you get really hot you can subtly mop your brow.
