How do you get a mh crisis team to do a home visit??

In the north west. A family member needs help quite urgently. He has had some kind of breakdown over the weekend and is now extremely paranoid that the police/doctors/authority are out to kill him and absolutey will not go to a gp voluntarily. This is all related to being wrongly arrested for a very serious crime (totally cleared of any involvement since) so if the police tried to take him to hospital it would be awful. I don't have a clue what to do. The gp just said phone 999 if he gets worse.

Yep, dial 999. Paramedics are very good at gently persuading mentally unwell people into going with them.

Poor guy. I think this lockdown has heightened those fears in a lot of people. To be honest, it's something I am struggling with myself. Could you talk it out with him? What was he wrongfully arrested for?

Depending on where he is in the north west some areas have street triage cars so a police car with a mental health staff member in it so that may be an option if available where you live but you can’t request it.

Some crisis teams you can access directly. So check your local area. However most will only talk to people who want to engage with them. So it’s tricky if he doesn’t want to work with them. He’s only likely to be sectioned if he is a serious risk to himself or others.

The further problem is even if he sees any professional people he may not be able to fully explain what is happening to him or is too frightened to. If he has told you anything about his actual intentions, then that’s useful for them.

As someone who has been an in patient and been under MH services for years to get help the risk to yourself or others has to be genuine. They will be looking at him closely. It sounds awful but just saying I want to kill myself isn’t enough. It sounds like he is in a psychotic episode. I have suffered with this, he will have totally lost touch with reality. I did end up in hospital for a few months. I’m really sorry but you will not be able to reason with him at all, it is no failing on your part.

Thank you all. He went to a&e voluntarily earlier today which is a huge relief.

Ok, that’s good he’s acknowledging it now. So hopefully he’ll get some support.

Hope everything goes well. ❤️ The NHS were fantastic for me. It took me years to fully recover but they were there for me every step of the way.
