Toasters - probably a dumb question

I've had toasters for years, and they have always been on a worktop without anything above them. We are having a new kitchen put in soon, and we will now have top cupboards all the way round.

Can you use a toaster underneath a top cupboard, or do you have to move it forwards so there's nothing above it?

I move it forward. Especially as I have light strips directly above where it is when pushed back.

ErrolTheDragon · 11/08/2020 10:42

We pull ours forward when we use it.
I'm not sure it's absolutely necessary but easy to do so why not.

But do make sure your kettle isn't under the cupboard - steam can be extremely damaging.

Mine is underneath a wall unit, I never move it forward - although there's quite a gap between the toaster and the bottom of the unit. Never caused any marks or issues (I've yet to burn the toast though 😕)

Owleyes16 · 11/08/2020 10:43

I've had mine under a cupboard for 3 years, it never occurred to me not to put it there.

Whether you need to or not is doubtless a function of heat output of toaster, height of cupboard above counter, ventilation, material cupboard is made of and positioning of lights. Grin

Ours is under with about a foot clearance. It’s ok.

Bluntness100 · 11/08/2020 10:50

Both my kettle and toaster are under a cupboard, also about a foot clearance, no issues at all.

We bought a small convection oven instead. Love it. Can toast, grill, slow cook, bake, roast, so many functions. I hated the crumbs that drop from a toaster.

Thank you for clearing that up - does the type of bread being toasted have any relevance?

Well, I suppose if it was thick, moist slices it might need longer toasting and create steam. Or dry thin bread would burn quicker. Grin

Ours was under a cupboard it was broadly fine but bear in mind the heat will “get to” to the undersides of the top cupboards in time and you might get some discolouration. Best to pull it out when using.

hedgehoglurker · 11/08/2020 15:31

Also pull out, as I've seen damage caused to cabinets and lights. I actually put mine on a small tray which helps catch crumbs and helps it slide more easily.

cringeworthit · 11/08/2020 16:16

Thanks all, good idea, that tip about putting it on a tray.
