hi all,

My DD is 10, this evening she has started a light period. Bright red blood.

I'm a bit sad, as she is so young still and periods whilst part of growing up are such a faff and stressful.

Does anyone have any tips? Are there small pads for younger girls? What will make her feel better about it?

I've obviously reassured her she isn't going to die and it will be ok.

I remember having horrific flow and pain and needing to go on medication quite early, I'm hopeful she doesn't experience similar.

I started at the same age (although 20+ years ago) my mum was very good and had already been very open about periods etc so it wasn't a complete surprise. She bought me a selection of towels in and also a big pack of chocolate biscuits which I could keep in my bedroom and were just for me.

My issue was we didn't have sanitary bins in primary school, that might be something you want to look into in she will be returning in Sep

I think it's natural as a mum to be a bit overwhelmed but just try and be honest and open with any questions she has, I'm sure other posters will be along soon with suggestions for books etc aimed at her age range

DewDropsonKittens · 10/08/2020 19:13

Thank you secret, when I started I genuinely thought I was dying as my mother told me nothing. Back then, they didn't teach us in school..or I didn't listen haha!

Might want to get her some big girl period pants

At 10 she'll already know about periods etc, so if i were you I'd just keep it very lowkey, check to see if she needs painkillers or a hot water bottle and then leave her to it. Making a big deal of it is likely to.make her feel like it's something scary.

MsEllany · 10/08/2020 19:17

Go to Tesco and look in the sanitary wear aisle. Buy her a big bar of chocolate to indulge herself and some calpol melts if she is in pain.

DewDropsonKittens · 10/08/2020 19:18

@00100001 is there a particular brand or a recommended type i should get or just pants?

My daughter started her periods in primary school. It was OK.
I had already prepped her. She had a pencil case (bit more discreet than a washbag) with pads, spare underwear and nappy sacks in case she needs to bring stained underwear or used pads home. She also wore black skirt or trousers to school which was actually useful because she did leak twice and luckily it wasn't obvious. I had also mentioned that leaks are common place and not to worry but ask for help or ring me if necessary.
I contacted her teacher and she was very supportive.

superram · 10/08/2020 19:19

I think period pants will be the way forward. That’s what I’m going to do.

JoanofLarks · 10/08/2020 19:19

Period pants are also good, an extra layer of protection. I think Sainsbury do them.

Butterbeeeen · 10/08/2020 19:19

I have a DD10 so know how sad you must feel OP. I have no reassurance other than you are a lovely mum for trying to make it better for her. I do work in a primary school though and we have sanitary bins in our ks2 section as we have quite a few children who have started their period.

habibihabibi · 10/08/2020 19:20

My niece startat at 10. My sis said thinx period pants and swim period pants have been game changing. Big outlay but really worth it.

DewDropsonKittens · 10/08/2020 19:28

Not sure if I'm being a bit thick here..

My period pants are big black high waists pants that I wear when on my period,

Is that what you ladies mean by period pants or is there something for youngsters?

They're specific underwear designed to wear when you're on your period, so you don't need pads or tampons. Modibodi are good.

You can get actual period pants which means she wouldn't have to think about pads or anything like that. You can get them online
Elasticpotato · 10/08/2020 19:35

Sainsbury’s ones are in the 20% off when they have one, but they’re okay as a basic they are not brilliant. They’re a bit nylon-y and sweaty. Thinx and modibodi are good. Just think through about school logistics as she may need to change period pants mid day depending on flow so might not work. But if she’s light she should easily get through 8-3 in one pair.

SteelyPanther · 10/08/2020 19:35

LilLets do some teen pads. You can get them in Boots and Sainsbury’s

00100001 · 10/08/2020 19:35

You can either get her period pants that are designed to absorb the blood as PPs have posted.

Or just some fancy 'big' dark pants with funky patterns, so she can wear those when it's her period. Make her feel special etc

Or both

Have a chat with her and aka her what she would like.

Chicchicchicchiclana · 10/08/2020 19:36

What advice do you need?

Presumably she knows about periods and why girls and women have them?

She doesn't need any extra small pads for little girls or anything odd like that if that's what you are asking. 10 is young but 11 or 12 is probably average so not something to get stressed about.

Bbdm1984 · 10/08/2020 19:36

Op are you in the uk? There is a subscription service called betty box that i found amazing when my dd started her period. Its a box each month that cones and has sweets socks and stationary as well as a choice of tampons or pads my daughter loved it.

DewDropsonKittens · 10/08/2020 19:39

Thank you all, I will have a look at the pants. I may buy her a selection and see what she feels most comfortable in

I like the idea of the subscription box, I will look at that too

My daughter started at 10 too. I second the idea of a Little bag of essentials and spares in the office. I also used to leave her stronger pain killers with the staff as calpol did nothing. The hardest thing was she was a swimmer so was using tampax at that age too. Hope she is feeling ok today

grey12 · 10/08/2020 19:40

Got my period at 9yo.

Is your daughter very small? Normal pads work perfectly fine!

I didn't start wearing tampons until much later (13?) And those were the smallest available. Just for the beach or swimming pool (yes I did go to the beach with a pad Confused after a dip in the cold water your period kind of stops so I could take the pad out)

Lelophants · 10/08/2020 19:41

Just don't do what my mum did and show that you are sad. She will probably feel embarrassed and ashamed as girls often do through puberty. Normalised, it's exciting if anything:) but also not a big deal.

lazylockdowner · 10/08/2020 19:41

I buy these for my girls
