Car boot pricing/advice

Doing my first car boot this weekend. Looking for general tips and pricing for these items and if worth taking -

costume jewellery (necklaces bangles and earrings), ornaments/nick backs/dishes, bags, clothes (good quality tops trousers jackets dresses) new gift sets toiletries, new gift set nail varnishes, gift set hand creams. Pans/glasses/ mugs/ Picture frames.

I have been told that 'junk' items sell so can I really sell a half burned scented candle and used gift bags !?

If its your first time all the dealers and regulars will hassle you as soon as you arrive and try to get stuff cheaper. Be prepared and have lots of change. Charge as much as you dare then come down if you need to! Good luck.

If you want any more than £1 per item for the clothing don't take it to a carboot. Sell it on depop instead.

Jewelery/books/small toys/kitchen items 50p

Other items, pair of shoes, bag, flask, sports item £1

You can get £5 for some items such as a suitcase, big house item, garden furniture.

I find car boots are only really worth it if you have LOADS to sell and if you are not precious with how much you get. Cos even if you say 50p they will offer you 10p.

@MrsT1405 thanks I am quite scared about the hassle factor!

@Juanmorebeer great advice on pricing. We just have stuff to get rid off that can't be ebayed or not selling on Facebook marketplace- or it's going to the charity shop. Seems a shame not to try first. Will have a look at depop too.

Yeah exactly that's what I do! Have a big clear out and sell what you can cheap as chips and then donate the rest.

I think it also depends if it is a "professional" car boot type place, or if it is your local school / scout group / community association hosting one as a fund raiser

Update: We did our car boor sale today as previous attempts rained off! It was great - I made £50 and dh m/de £150. The worst part was trying to work out how the pitches were laid out. No hassle and everyone was lovely (except the man selling puppies away from mum Angry)

The best part wasn't the the money but seeing the stuff go and getting rid and it not going to landfill was so cathartic. Kitchen items were the best seller- baking tins etc

I started to get a feel for the prices really quickly and didnt label any prices as changed them.

Most items went for 50p or a £1. Gift bags were a hit at 20p each! No jewlery sold at all so to charity. Been. To the tip too so left with a small pile for the next one...

Well done OP I might do one next weekend maybe

earsup · 23/08/2020 22:10

surprised to hear the jewellery didnt go....when we did boot sale a few years ago, we were swarmed with buyers for the costume jewellery...could have sold each item 10 X over...!!....books and clothes taken to charity shop but at least we made cash and cleared old junk.

cherrypiepie · 24/08/2020 10:32

@Juanmorebeer thanks and thanks for all the tips!

@earsup I was surprised too. Wondered if covid was putting people off buying jewellery?? just w stab in the dark at a reason. It was all 50p and some was really nice. I sold one bracelet let out about 100 pieces ☹️. It was all 50p maybe I will keep it for next time rather than chuck it then.

Not bad op Grin Bootsales are great, we go every weekend and have a house full of crap to show for it we normally try and do one at least once a year and generally make £150-200. I find the cheaper you sell, the more stuff you shift so we tend to under price if anything just so we get a bit of money for it and don't have to bring it home again.
