The irony - mousetrap required for mouse that cat has brought in

The irony of my situation is not lost on me.

Our cat is a prolific mouser, most mornings we come down to find a bloodbath in 'his' room (where the cat flap comes in - we have to close the door to this room as he brings so many rodents in and we don't want him letting them loose all over the house). He let a live one go a few months ago, and when we couldn't catch it, weren't too worried as we figured he'd bring us its remains eventually. Except he didn't, and now the blooming thing has set up home behind our built in cabinets in his room.

To add insult to injury, the mouse (and presumably its expanding family now) is now eating the cat's food - every morning when I come down, every last scrap of dried food has gone - our cat has never cleaned his bowl before.

So, I need to lay traps, I'm not squeamish, so happy to deal with dead bodies, but we also live rurally, and I've managed to rehome lots of his survivors successfully. Do I get a humane live trap, or a quick death one? What are recommendations?? I just need something that works quickly.
