Next door neighbours have pigeons!!

So in the last 3 weeks we have had new neighbours, 2 weeks ago they were doing DIY in the garden until 10:30 at night for about 5 days. Turns out they were building a pigeon coop. This week they have started letting the pigeons out to fly around. After only a few days there is pigeon poop all over our fence and it’s starting to appear on the patio in the garden. They also fly up to our window and sit on our window sills outside so we can’t even open our windows for fear of them flying in. I really don’t know where we stand with this or if there is anything we can do about it. Does anyone have any similar experiences?

I am sure I read somewhere that in theory, “pet” pigeons should be relatively free of the diseases that wild pigeons (is that the phrase?) carry. Not that it helps you with their pooh, but that’s all I’ve got.

Babs709 · 09/08/2020 21:15

Oh window sills - you could put those little spike strips down?

Disfordarkchocolate · 09/08/2020 21:16

Little spikes may look grim but they should help. I'd be very annoyed.

OP, you know your fence and patio are outside don't you... a bit of bird shit won't hurt them! I'd be annoyed about them being on the window sill but just shoo them away!

Elouera · 09/08/2020 21:22

I thought pigeon poo was very corrosive and will strip the varnish off wooden garden furniture, window sills and cars! Its also bloody slippery on paths! Could you get one of those large, predator decoy bird statues like a hawk or owl?

Check your council website, although there may not be a specific pigeon section. Give the council a call though with your concerns.

Thorandluna · 09/08/2020 21:25

Yeah I thought it was corrosive too! We’ve only just recently repainted the fence which is doubly annoying! I will look into getting a decoy statue for the garden, thanks!

Certain areas round here you are not allowed to keep them in the garden. Depending on the size of the coop they may also require planning permission. I would contact the council tomorrow to enquire.

Thorandluna · 09/08/2020 21:27

Thanks, will definitely give the council a ring to see what they have to say!

Our neighbours have pigeons too, they don't really cause us any bother and never noticed any poop at all. Sometimes they are a bit noisy but that's it. Maybe they will settle down once they have settled in to their new home. Our neighbours have been here a lot longer than us, as have the pigeons.

What a stupid reply! I bet you wouldn't like bird poo over your patio and garden furniture Hmm
Babs709 · 09/08/2020 22:16

funtimes we have a lot of bird feeders in our garden and get a lot of pigeons, so get a lot of poo too. But I don’t mind, so clearly not everybody does! In fact, I’m actively encouraging them by putting food out. I quite like pigeons. Not that the PP sarky answer was helpful though.

OP... they’re probably using your garden as part of their “route”. In theory you could make them fly around your garden with tall trees etc but I appreciate that isn’t always going to be an option.

GeorgiaGirl52 · 09/08/2020 22:54

A large rubber snake curled up in the center of your patio table or draped over the top of your fence should discourage them. I put a couple in my berry bushes and my fig tree to discourage the birds eating them faster than I can pick them.

FrostyGirl66 · 09/08/2020 23:01

I'd be right pissed off if they kept shitting on my washing. Keep an eye out for that too.

My partner has racing pigeons in a loft in the garden. He only lets them out at a specific time each day, they fly high in the sky not just around our garden/neighbours and then land on our loft and go in. The pigeons should not really be a nuisance to you in time. If they are hanging around the garden alot it may just be your neighbours way of making them used to the surroundings and getting them used to the new location
Hope this helps- they shouldnt really a nuisance for you, as a previous poster above has mentioned noise, that is true they have a cooing noise often but hopefully they are at the bottom of the garden for you so would not be an issue

Ditto sentiments of Coffee, Babs & Galaxy from someone else who has lived beside a coop for a while.

Their names aren't Jack and Vera, are they?

Hi,

I know this post is a few years old but wanted to know how you got on with your neighbours and the pigeons?. We had new neighbours move in about 6 months ago and they have built 4 pigeon lofts in the garden. There are about 10 of them and the noise is incessant. Then they left them loose once a day and they fly all over the place, feathers and droppings in the garden. Can't stand it.

IngridCC · 25/05/2024 21:57

oh - the pigeons to not have any tags so not racing pigeons. can't imagine why anyone would want to keep them. Does anyone know if you need a licence or if they need to be registered ? Thanks
