Breakfast ideas for DD with early start

NotSuchAnEarlyBird · 09/08/2020 18:05

DD (8) will happily sleep until 7-730 and won't eat within half an hour to an hour of waking up. She just can't manage it. This is usually not an issue as on school days I wake her at 715 if she's not up already and school has always started at 810.

When she goes back, she'll have 4 early starts (lessons start at 720) two of them being PE.

What do I do? What can I give her to eat? I'm a bit reluctant to wake her too early else she will be exhausted. But if I let her sleep as long as possible then she won't have time to eat.

Why won't she eat? Tbh she's just going to have to suck it up and manage something. What does she usually have for breakfast?

Also, what ridiculous type of school has lessons for 8yr olds at 7.20am 4 days a week!? That's insane, even starting at 8.10 is far too early imo.

Tanaqui · 09/08/2020 18:10

Can she have a drink- ideally milk, but could be a smoothie or something, and then take a breakfast as a morning break snack?

oofadoofa · 09/08/2020 18:11

Sorry if this may oversimplify the problem but this really doesn’t need to be so complicated. Why not just wake her up 30 mins earlier and send her to bed 30 mins earlier too? Even without the early bedtime, we’re only talking here about 30 mins, how much more exhausted than normal can she be?

What school does she go to that starts at that ridiculous time? Could she have a portable snack she can eat in the car/as she walks?

NotSuchAnEarlyBird · 09/08/2020 18:13

I don't know. She says it makes her feel sick. She has never eaten just after waking up. If we wake them to go somewhere, I always take something for her to eat on the way but she can't eat in lessons! I can give her a larger snack at break time (then probably she won't eat lunch, will want a large afternoon snack and then won't eat dinner 🙄)

She will usually have cereal or toast but if it's too soon after waking she will have two spoons/bites and leave the rest.

I'm expecting her to be utterly exhausted in the first week of term at least! Getting back into routine. She also has the school sports club one evening a week, starts at 1830 until 1945. She's usually in bed at 8 so I've no idea if she should have dinner beforehand or after.

Fortunately for her she has a 1.5 minute walk to school so that won't help for extra breakfast time.

It's a normal start time where I live, but it's not normal that they have 4, it's usually 2 for 8-9 and 9-10 year olds and 4 for the next two year groups. I'm hoping it's a mistake...

Lessons at 720?!? Where is this?

midgebabe · 09/08/2020 18:26

Pack up a jam buttie

katmarie · 09/08/2020 18:27

What about home made oat flapjacks/cereal bars/fruit bars, that she can munch on the walk to school? Or a smoothie as someone suggested. I sympathise with her, I can't eat until I've been up for an hour or so, I just feel sick at the thought of it.

Wankpuffin · 09/08/2020 19:30

Wow - where do you live? 7:20?! That would do me in!

NotSuchAnEarlyBird · 09/08/2020 19:35

We're in Switzerland. I won't explain the rest of the timetables. Every class has different hours! A smoothie is a possibility.

She has classes starting at 7:20 and won't finish at school til 19:45? When I have worked those hours I've been exhausted, so I'm not surprised you think she will be!

midnightstar66 · 09/08/2020 19:42

When dd has running club and cheerleading club before school we boil eggs and store in the fridge. She usually has one of them on a slice of bread and a banana. Sticks some breakfast biscuits in her bag for a quick snack while she's getting changed after

Ernieshere · 09/08/2020 19:44

Overnight oats?

Just do some mini versions, maybe half the recipe?

My DD enjoys getting her own ready the night before.

Failing that just a yoghurt & banana?

No, she finishes school at 4pm (and will be home over lunch time 1145-1330) so there'll be time for homework and something to eat.

Eggs might work, she eats them in the day but has never wanted them in the morning. Will have to ask her.

You can buy reusable squeezy pouches, I’ll try and find a link in a minute. You could definitely get a smoothie in those! Bulk it out with yoghurt etc

RedCatBlueCat · 09/08/2020 19:49

Seeing if she will drink something like a smoothie (with peanut butter in?) less than 30 mins after waking is a good suggestion.

With the evening activities - we feed early, and then have "pudding" when he gets back.

Nacreous · 09/08/2020 19:49

NotSuch Ahh, that makes more sense! I was thinking it was going to be an incredibly long day!

NotSuchAnEarlyBird · 09/08/2020 19:49

Stupid question after looking at those recipes....can you eat oats without cooking them then? I've only ever used them cooked in porridge or crumble!

OP posts:
Chocolate4me · 09/08/2020 20:03

I'd make a banana, milk, cocoa powder and a little honey or maybe add some yoghurt smoothie or similar, then perhaps a more substantial snack on those days, she can drink it on her way in perhaps

Ernieshere · 09/08/2020 20:09

Yes, uou leave the oats raw, they soak overnight and swell. DD likes the peanut buttter type ones.

They are lovely, we keep saying we will take some down to the beach for breakfast one morning, if its hot. They fill you up quite well.

2155User · 09/08/2020 20:11

-Overnight oats
-Egg muffins (omelet mixture, add anything you want, pour into muffin cases and bake like a cupcake)
-Smoothie
-Pancakes that you make and then pop in the toaster in the morning
