I wonder if anyone had any suggestions for things to do in Oxford out of the ordinary?

We're going this week and its expected storms the whole time! We were planning on going to the museums, on the boats but they're all still closed unfortunately.

We went punting last weekend which was a lot of fun but maybe not in a thunder storm.

I'd ignore the forecasts for now.. I'm in Oxfordshire and the weather seems to have ignored whatever it says :)

I'd go punting, there are plenty of places to go from (down St Aldates I think tho I may have the road name wrong!) that is fun.
Walk Port Meadows. If you have a car, go to Blenheim! I guess it depends on what you like and whether you have children with you.

Is Christchurch college closed? I enjoyed the Harry Potter great hall.

Oh and the hop on tour bus is actually very enjoyable.. I took my Mum on it and we both really enjoyed the tour!

Hi

We do have a car and no children so can be flexible. The college is also closed unfortunately as I did want to do a tour!

Punting may be fun if the weathers dry and I did look at the bus tour but hadn't done one before so wasn't sure how worth it it was.

Is the castle and prison worth a visit?

The castle is pretty boring to be honest although I haven't been in the prison.

I just checked and Magdalen College has reopened its gardens to visitors. That's definitely worth a visit and some other colleges may be open. You can still walk around Christ Church Meadows even though the buildings are shut.

You could also climb the tower of St Mary the Virgin's church which gives you amazing views over the city but you have to book a time slot in advance.

I was in oxford last week and everything was closed. There was a huge queue for punts though. The shopping is great. I'd forgotten what a lovely city it is. I recommend Lauren's brownies. If they are at the market. They were divine!

Thanks for the tips everyone. I'm sure we'll find something to occupy ourselves, a change of scenery if nothing else.

Hopefully it will be dry that will at least make things easier.

The Botanic Gardens have reopened although you have to book ahead. Worth a visit.

Last time I was there which is a few years ago now, there was a walking tour, it was great and we were knackered at the end of it, but it covered all bases and the guide was funny but knowledgeable. Saved us having to figure it all out for ourselves!

It is a beautiful place.

imissthesouth · 09/08/2020 21:49

The bus tours can be a little boring but they're great for photos. Oxford is my home town and I love it!

Get to the punts before noon. The Ashmolean Museum is reopening tomorrow. Lunch at the Turf Tavern. A walk through Jericho on your way to Port Meadow, across the river, along the tow path to the Perch.

ibelieveinangels · 09/08/2020 22:21

I went punting there yesterday. We only queued for about 15 minutes and it was a lovely afternoon. I only live about 20 minutes from there and the weather is supposed to be lovely for another few days

Pythonesque · 09/08/2020 22:41

The Ashmolean museum is reopening from tomorrow, I think you have to book timed tickets though these are still free. They have extended their (paid entry) Young Rembrandt exhibition which also sounds rather good.

Hope you have a good time.

Walking tours are great and should still be happening as they're obviously outdoors! Try an Inspector Morse one, should involve plenty of pubs :)
