How soon after passing test did you drive on motorway?

Just wondering how long it took you to have the courage to drive on the motorway.

I've been driving 18 months now and still too scared to do it Blush

The next day my Mum took me out on the motorway and the day after I drove solo

DappledThings · 09/08/2020 08:40

About 2 months. But probably best part of a year before I felt confident about it

Dollywilde · 09/08/2020 08:42

That day! Was keen to get it out of the way. It’s really not different to the dual carriageway A roads I’d learned on though. Also I thought learners were allowed on the motorway nowadays?

spiritedawai · 09/08/2020 08:45

The same day. If you've driven on a dual carriageway you can drive on a motorway. It's actually really easy Grin

Backarackhams · 09/08/2020 08:45

As soon as I got my own car - a couple of weeks. I had to, it was the only way to get to work unless I wanted an hour+ commute!

daisybrown37 · 09/08/2020 08:45

I didn’t go on motorways for ages after passing, this was largely due to living in a bit of the country that is not that close to any!

Realistically they are no different from using a slip road to join a dual carriageway.

Silvercatowner · 09/08/2020 08:46

Driving on a 3 lane motorway is much easier than a 2 lane carriageway.

jiffyjackfruit · 09/08/2020 08:46

On the way home from my driving test.

CherryPavlova · 09/08/2020 08:47

About a week. I wanted someone who could drive already with me - not many motorway lessons then. I think sometimes you have to bite the bullet and go for it. Motorways are much easier than tiny rural roads.

IamHyouweegobshite · 09/08/2020 08:47

The very next day, I drove alone from Kent to Wales (to see my nan). My mum was terrified. I loved it.

FraughtwithGin · 09/08/2020 08:48

About 5 or 6 weeks. Would probably have done it sooner, but we went on holiday for 3 weeks the day after I passed my test, although I did drive by myself that day doing errands for my mother (after dropping her at the hairdresser).
My first motorway drive was on a Saturday afternoon going to collect my brother from his school as his rugby game, I think, had been cancelled last minute. No parents around, so borrowed some petrol money from my younger sister and zapped off up the motorway, collected brother and came home again. It was fine (and 44 years ago). Parents impressed that I had used the motorway rather than taking the normal road (but it was quicker, so a no-brainer).

NoWordForFluffy · 09/08/2020 08:49

Passed at the end of May and drove on the motorway in August as we went up to the Edinburgh Festival.

Jojobar · 09/08/2020 08:49

A few weeks but with someone in the car with me. On my own not until about 3 years after. However that was an emergency trip where I had to drive a 500 mile round trip in one day. That kind of got me over my motorway phobia!

megletthesecond · 09/08/2020 08:50

I think it was a couple of weeks. I booked a motorway lesson so I knew what I was doing.

Horehound · 09/08/2020 08:51

Day 1 I had to commute 40 miles every day and I got my car delivered to work so I had to. It was also thick snow so I really got put in the deep end.

If you're scared maybe go for extra lessons specifically on the motorway
It's not bad anyway, once you're on you'll be fine

princesspeppax · 09/08/2020 08:51

I've also been driving 18 months OP & never drove a motorway, to scared now and think its been to long that I probably wont ever get the courage to do it Sad

If you're really scared, could you do pass plus and go on with an instructor?

sonjadog · 09/08/2020 08:52

Same day. A friend and I went to visit another friend who was in hospital that evening.

happytoday73 · 09/08/2020 08:53

I had a motorway lesson the week afterwards... It really helped...

HPandTheNeverEndingBedtime · 09/08/2020 08:53

Never, but that's because I don't live near any they can't be that different to a dual carriageway though.

PurBal · 09/08/2020 08:53

I took a pass plus course a few weeks afterwards. Really good decision.

Candleabra · 09/08/2020 08:55

Straight away. Picked a quiet time. Motorways are easy to drive on, but appreciate it feels like a big deal if you're not used to it. Could you take someone with you as a passenger to boost your confidence, pick a less busy motorway and a quiet time?

isabellerossignol · 09/08/2020 08:56

A day or two later. From memory I think my older sister took me, to get me used to joining the flow of traffic.

If you've driven on a dual carriageway, a motorway is an awful lot easier and a lot safer.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 09/08/2020 08:56

A week.... And it was only that long as we were busy. I drove on dual carriageways in lessons (instructor insisted before test, believed it was safer to that for the first time with someone qualified). A month later I was sharing the driving on our holiday to Scotland from Yorkshire. Two months I drove to London with toddler DD by myself.
