Tesco covid shoe policy

Took my dd to tesco tonight a she has had a growth spurt and outgrew all her shoes for school.
Sanatized our hand and the trolly and put our masks on and we went into the store.

Got quick top up of bread and milk and straight to the shoes.
The whole clothes section was empty apart from two staff filling another row with clothes.

I'm about to try a pair of shoes on dd and the man comes over and said this is not allowed. I stated i had no idea what size of shoe she is.
He said i was welcome to buy both pairs of shoes and return whichever one didnt fit.
That would have cost me an extra £20 that i dont have.

I honestly dont see the sence.
Instead of

  1. Visitig tesco once and quickly trying on 2 pair of shoes picking the pair that fit, paying and leave.

They wanted me to
-Visit tescos, pick up 2 pairs of shoes. Go home dd try on the shoes. The pair of shoes due to be returned have still been touched but they have also sat around our house for a few days. We then have to take a second trip back to tescos together to return them at customer service.

I could only afford one pair, so i am £19 down for a pair of shoes that might fit.

Is it me or is it a little bizarre?

@ThatDamnScientist we had a Clarks fitting last week and got to try several pairs. I was impressed - very well organised and fitted for shoes and trainers really quickly, maybe because there were only a few people so less distractions, easier for staff to access shoes in storeroom etc.

kerfuffling · 08/08/2020 22:10

@ItchyScratch

Not Tesco’s fault at all.

This is the rules now- dont you realise?

They are doing this everywhere now- or at least, they are supposed to.

Get a grip

They weren't doing it in either Asda or TK Maxx the other day.

Besides, what difference does it make? People are picking stuff up and putting it down all the time in the rest of the store.

jeff1965 · 08/08/2020 22:10

They're not doing this at Sketchers, we'll the one I visited anyway. Hand sanitise on the way in and then you just try on and put back. The second time I visited they said you had to be wearing socks or they'd lend some pop socks, but that was it/

I think that the thinking is that it makes people feel better/safer when shopping if there are extra Covid rules that are being followed. If they can see something is being done differently, it gives them greater confidence in the security of shopping as an activity.

In reality, as people have pointed out, shoppers are picking up and putting down things all the time in shops that then remain on the shelves. The whole idea of quarantining certain items thus seems somewhat redundant.

DoesThisMakeSence · 08/08/2020 22:12

ThousandsAreSailing it did feel strange i could take them into the carpark, let her try them on and then go back in if need be.
Very strange system indeed.
But as i said rules are rules. Its the poor staff i feel sorry for trying to enforce them.

It's odd that it varies, I tried on shoes in Sainsbury's, no issues. Went to buy a bike helmet (it's a safety item so must fit) and Halfords wouldn't let me try on, we to independent shop and I tried on no problem.

DoesThisMakeSence · 08/08/2020 22:18

Oh yes minnieok you would definatly expect to try on a helmet. They wont keep your head safe if they are not fitting correctly.
Its so confusing when there are so many varied rules.

MyNameHasBeenTaken · 08/08/2020 22:20

Minnieok
I dont usually say anything good about halfords....
But dd needed a new bike helmet a couple of weeks ago.
We had a nice young man helping us. I explained the issue (dd funny shape head. Old helmet damaged)
He said everything they have in stick is out on display.
We wanted more of a skate style helmet as they are a better fit.
He gave us one to try. It sat on top of her head.. he put that to one side and gave us a bigger one.
We took the bigger one. He took the smaller one and cleaned it with whatever they use for cleaning helmets.

Also tried on trainers in asda no problem. And in sports direct.

WhentheDealGoesDown · 08/08/2020 22:20

Yes, I think you are meant to buy a selection of sizes then go outside and have a trying on session in the street using the shop window as a mirror, then return what you don’t want - it’s the new normal

GabsAlot · 08/08/2020 22:21

i was wondering what shops were doing about shoes-seem some let yu try on and some dont

dont see the point of footlet things if youre tuching the shoes anyway

ssd · 08/08/2020 22:32

It is very confusing. Working in a shop just now is a minefield.

makingmiracles · 08/08/2020 22:38

We bought shoes in Clark’s the other week. No such problem, people were trying on shoes and returning ones that didn’t fit back onto the shelves 🤷🏻‍♀️ They have removed most of their shelving inside store and there were sanitising stations on entering.
Think some shops are interpreting the guidance very differently and a litttle OTT imo.

TorysSuckRevokeArticle50 · 08/08/2020 22:41

They aren't doing this in Sainsbury's we tried a few pairs on DD on Thursday.

I also went into Skechers and Schuh last week and tried several pairs on myself.

justanotherneighinparadise · 08/08/2020 22:42

Absolutely bonkers. Do socked feet even transmit covid?

HeyBlaby · 08/08/2020 22:45

It is ridiculous.

SouthernComforts · 08/08/2020 22:47

Its a bit similar to glasses shopping. Today in specsavers they said try any glasses on but put them in this box to be cleaned after before being put back on display. Tbh I'd never considered how many faces the display glasses had touched before Envy

MumGoneCrazy · 08/08/2020 22:48

Do some people really not wear socks while trying on shoes/trainers?

Sports direct also sprays them with a sanitizer spray after you try them on.

fruitpastille · 08/08/2020 22:50

There's no consistency so it's all completely pointless. I'm sceptical about the risk from touching something anyway.

I've been to 2 independent shoe shops as well as sports direct in the last few weeks and there was absolutely no problem trying shoes in store. And no obvious quarantining system. In one I could just help myself to a sandal on display, try it and put it back. I didn't need socks either. In mountain warehouse dd was able to slip on a couple of coats to check the fit. The only shop where we couldn't do this was for school uniform but they did what they could to make exchanges easy. I don't see why the OP should be expected to know about the Tesco policy and I agree it's a big disadvantage to those with less money to spare.

BackforGood · 08/08/2020 22:52

It's not you OP, it is completely bizarre, and, like you said, just means people would have to go back and forth into the shop ptentially several times. Also means more contact for the staff and they have to issue refunds etc. More queuse waiting for this to be done.
I feel sorry for the shop staff having to try to work with weird policies like this.
If they really think there is a high risk of the virus being transferred by people touching shoes, then they need to have a system whereby any shoe tried on goes into their 'quarantine' there and then, nt taken into people's homes and then people having to come back and fore into the shop to get a properly fitting shoe.

APurpleSquirrel · 08/08/2020 22:53

Took DC (5&2) to Clark's Outlet a few weeks ago. Made an appointment which meant we had our own fitter. We chose the styles & DC tried several pairs on, fitter stayed with us, checked sizing etc until we were happy. Not sure what she did with the shoes we rejected but saw lots of people touching shoes etc. Sounds like some places are going way OTT.

Lindy2 · 08/08/2020 23:03

We did the school shoe shop the other day. We had to use the hand sanitiser on entering (which is absolutely fine) but then we were able to touch and try on shoes.

We also tried on trainers in Asda the other week. I'm not sure if we were actually supposed to now I've seen this post. I find supermarkets shoes sizes all over the place though and usually end up buying at least a size bigger than the foot measurement. Again we used sanitiser at the shop entrance so had clean hands when we picked up the shoes.

TickledOnion · 08/08/2020 23:03

My DDs tried on multiple pairs in M&S yesterday. We just washed our hands after.

TickledOnion · 08/08/2020 23:04

And sanitised hands before

rosesandcashmere · 08/08/2020 23:08

These are the rules now. Can you look up a foot measuring guide online and look before you go?

JingleCatJingle · 08/08/2020 23:08

We tried on flip flops, sandals and shoes in decathlon without any issues.
That is bizarre.
