What do you take when self catering ?

Am off to a cottage for a week with DH
and two DC 7 and 9 next week.
Am trying to be super organised as I have more time than usual to pack and started wondering what other people pack that makes this type of holiday better ?
So for example I always take tea
Towels and sharp knives and a decent bottle opener .This time I have also got some ice trays and Tupperware set aside to go with us .
We are quite rural where we are staying so are likely to be eating in quite a lot and packing pic Nic’s for day trips - what else should I take ?
We will do a supermarket shop on arrival.
Don’t want to literally take the kitchen
Sink but am curious to know what others find helpful !
Thanks all

Foil and cling film.

AgeLikeWine · 08/08/2020 21:05

Corkscrew.
Spare corkscrew.

And that’s it Grin.

mindutopia · 08/08/2020 21:07

We only ever do self catering and I’ve literally never brought anything for the kitchen with me. Maybe some small snack pots for bringing dc’s snacks with us during the day and some foil or parchment paper for wrapping up sandwiches. In present times, I wouldn’t plan to eat out ever so I’d bring drinks bottles, cool bag and ice packs to freeze for packed lunch. Otherwise always managed just fine with what’s supplied.

Oven gloves
Self catering places either don't have them or have ones that have really awkward to use.

Pegs
Self catering places never have enough.

HereBeFuckery · 08/08/2020 21:14

Kid sized cutlery and plastic cups/bowls in case DD breaks anything.
Sandwich bags. (Ikea pack with two sizes in a box)
Salt and pepper (in grinders).
Oil to cook (I have a tiny bottle which I refill each time).

Then a big food order to arrive an hour after we do. Don't forget ice lollies in this weather!

Thanks for replies - interesting that I seem to already be on the overthinking side of the fence.
Food bags and foil / cling is good.
May pack oven glove too !
The trouble is the more you take the more there is to pack .
Trying to be sensible !!

My own chopping board (incase they only have a horrid glass or wooden one)
Small salt and pepper
Oven gloves (as I don’t like some of the ones we’ve been left to use before)
Small roll of cling film/foil
Sandwich bags
Clips for packets
Matches
Cork screw
Night light
Small bottle of oil
Dishwasher tablets
Washing up gloves
Hand soap

I haven always needed all these things but can guarantee if I don’t take them I will need them.
Did once end up going out and purchasing a cheap toaster and bath mat but it was a very cheap lady minute booking

EatsShootsAndRuns · 08/08/2020 21:25

Yorkshire teabags
Oven gloves

Tesco delivery about 2 hours after check-in.

Yellowbutterfly1 · 08/08/2020 21:29

Just remembered
I always take a cheap pack of hangers £1 for 10 in Asda type.
I’ve lost count the number one of times I’ve arrived and there’s nowhere near enough hangers for our clothes (and we do t take that many). I then just leave them in the wardrobe there.

Unescorted · 08/08/2020 21:30

Spice & condiment box, sharp knife, vege peeler and knife sharpener.

Helenluvsrob · 08/08/2020 21:31

We now take water bottles ( metal flask style but remember they keep water cold they don’t let you chill tap water if it’s a bit warm - keep a tonic bottle or even buy a big bottle of water to reuse.

And our contigo / keep cup things to take tea or coffee out.

Nacreous · 08/08/2020 21:32

I'd probably just buy a bag of ice if I were staying somewhere with a full sized freezer. Less hassle than topping up trays.

I'd usually take clips for doing up food, decent knives, sometimes a decent frying pan, and then picnic stuff like cool blocks etc.

Clymene · 08/08/2020 21:33

I have just come back and wished I'd taken a green scratchy, laundry detergent and dishwasher tablets. I naively though there may be a couple of dishwasher tablets but there weren't and ended up having to do an unplanned wash.

Oh and a couple of rolls of loo paper and a roll of kitchen towel.

madametomato · 08/08/2020 21:33

Chopping board. Those glass ones make my teeth screech

Notsoaccidentproneanymore · 08/08/2020 21:33

Bread knife (we always buy unsliced), 1 medium size sharp knife, small pots of salt and pepper, sandwich boxes and drinks bottles, bottle of spray oil (we always use this anyway), corkscrew/bottle opener,.

Imissmoominmama · 08/08/2020 21:35

Our coffee and tea. Containers for packed lunches- chillys bottles, rucksack etc. Food; mini speaker for phone music; extra loo roll.

NotMeNoNo · 08/08/2020 21:39

Tea towels (last place had weird fluffy ones)
Sharp knife
Sometimes take a good non stick frying pan
Coffee maker
2 decent mugs in case of tiny ones.
Sandwich bags for picnics.

uniglowooljumper · 08/08/2020 21:41

Extra towels - face flannels and those Turkish beach towels. The Flash stick fully loaded in case the WiFi is shit. Games.

Bandol · 08/08/2020 21:44

I always like to take dinner for the first evening (pasta, sauce, tin of tuna) and breakfast too. If pre-booked grocery delivery goes AWOL, or you can't be arsed to go out it means you are self-sufficient and don't need to go out.

Other useful things are cloths, tea towels, dishwasher tablets, washing tablets and a couple of bin bags.

Vintagegoth · 08/08/2020 21:48

Hand soap, either bars or liquid, whatever you prefer. SC seem to have some in the loo or kitchen, but never both. If your property has a washing machine take a couple of liquid laundry pods. Stops worries about running out of clothes and sometimes you can come home with a bag of clean clothes.

PashleyB · 08/08/2020 21:49

A couple of bin liners - we always end up buying them

Ohdeariedear · 08/08/2020 21:52

Foil
Sandwich bags
Ice cube bags/trays
Salt
Dish washer tablets
Washing machine tablets
My own pillows
Couple of loo rolls

LockdownDowner · 08/08/2020 21:57

Currently self-catering in a cottage in Pembrokeshire. I brought my slow cooker with me - I love being able to throw something in it and go off out for the day. Tonight we had spag bol, the sauce was done and I just had to boil the pasta. Also on the menu this week are pulled pork, curry and gammon in coke.

twilightcafe · 08/08/2020 21:58

Here's what I used on my last holiday:
Kitchen knives plus sharpener
Chopping board
Coffee pot
Mugs
Teabags
Small selection of spices for curries
Hot pepper sauce
All purpose cleaner, bleach, microfibre cloths
Dishwasher tablets

Insulated bags and freezer blocks for the picnics. Good bags. I also take my own baking tray and frying pan as these tend to be dodgy in most places. Plus a picnic blanket. I'd also take some garden games, a board game, pack of cards.
