Your height makes no difference

Seen a few threads now saying the op is only 5’3 if they were taller they wouldn’t be overweight. I’m 6’0 but have grown up this way like everybody else has grown into their body. I’m overweight by 1.5 stone but I never think we’ll it’s ok because if I was 5’3 I’d be obese

Height makes a massive difference.

My friend is 5'7 and if she puts on half a stone you can't tell at all. I'm 5'2, if I put on 6lb it's very obvious.

If you've got a bigger body then you've got more room for the weight so spread out.

SisterAgatha · 08/08/2020 20:09

Huge difference. I was called fat by a 6ft woman, but I weigh 3 stone less than she does. She’s a size 10 and I’m a 16z

ArriettyJones · 08/08/2020 20:10

Height makes a difference to whether a certain weight is healthy on your frame.

That’s why we have BMI as a measure.

SimonJT · 08/08/2020 20:11

Height makes a huge difference.

I’m just over six foot and around 95kg, if I was five foot I would be like three feet wide.

Thechase · 08/08/2020 20:13

No the weight isn’t distributed better it still ends up on my stomach or thighs and people point at me because unfortunately I have 35” legs so I look like a frog. My point was that regardless of height it makes It no different or any easier.

OP posts:
SisterAgatha · 08/08/2020 20:15

Well it does because 6ft woman has eaten the same amount of food as me, more even to get 3 stone heavier than I am, and I look worse for it.

JoJoSM2 · 08/08/2020 20:19

Well, everyone should eat for their height and activity level. I don’t see much point in cheering people up by saying that sb would be slim if they were foot taller.

Thechase · 08/08/2020 20:19

But it makes no difference you have grown up with your body you know what it needs and what it doesn’t. Being taller does not make you immune

OP posts:
amusedbush · 08/08/2020 20:21

DH is 6’ 3. He can put on a stone and it doesn’t make a jot of difference. I’m 5’ 4.5 and if I put on a stone I go up at least one dress size and my face swells up like a hamster 🌝

formerbabe · 08/08/2020 20:22

Well if someone 6' puts on five pounds it will be far less noticeable than if someone 5' puts on the same amount

TheFormerPorpentinaScamander · 08/08/2020 20:23

Of course it makes a difference. If you stretched me so I was a foot taller I would be thinner and less overweight. As my dad always says "I'm not overweight I'm undertall"

That's what people mean when they say they wouldn't be overweight. Not that tall people are immune to weight issues!

worldweary45 · 08/08/2020 20:24

I'm tall

I'm also fat

People tell me I can get away with carrying a bit of weight because I'm tall

Erm nope, I'm fat -it doesn't work like that

People have a very skewed sense of size

My grandma was also a tall woman and just told it how it was 😂

SisterAgatha · 08/08/2020 20:25

If a tall person has to be 11stone to be bmi normal weight, and a short person has to be 7stone to be bmi normal weight, of course the shorter person will be eating less.

ForeverRedSkinhead · 08/08/2020 20:25

@amusedbush but if you lose weight it's noticeable much faster , your dh could work hard to shift a stone and he'd look the sameSmile

Redcups64 · 08/08/2020 20:26

I’m only 9 stone- I’m over weight because I’m 5 foot. My friend is 9.5 stone and 5’7 as looks like a model- it makes a HUGE difference

Finkelbraun · 08/08/2020 20:28

It makes a huge difference.

Think of restaurant portions, ready-meal sizes, recipe quantities, weekly alcohol consumption limits, all those serving suggestions and nutritional information percentages on food packaging... all predicated on an "average" build. But a tall person will use up a lot more calories than a short person, other things being equal.

Yes, everyone should be curating their own intake, but the system disadvantages short people.

Redcups64 · 08/08/2020 20:30

You try and maintain a weight at 8 stone (my fit brother weighed that at just 15 years old!) as a full grown adult!! It’s hard!! We have to eat less as we are smaller, doesn’t make us any less hungrier though that a full sized adult, but put on juts 5lbs and you can massively notice you have gained weight- it’s horrible being smaller really

amusedbush · 08/08/2020 20:31
@amusedbush but if you lose weight it's noticeable much faster , your dh could work hard to shift a stone and he'd look the sameSmile
Thank you for that, I now feel better for being ‘chunky yet funky’ Grin

Longtalljosie · 08/08/2020 20:33

Ah come on - we have it much easier. We live in a society with large portion sizes and we have more calories to play with. Height really helps, let’s be honest...

Redcups64 · 08/08/2020 20:34

It’s not noticeable faster- because I am smaller I am over weight at just 9 stone. So I will have a stone to loose, I’m already at the lower end of loosing weight and EVERYONE knows the last stone is the hardest to shift, it’s just guttering for small people that the last stone is normally also the first Confused

IdblowJonSnow · 08/08/2020 20:34

I'm 5 feet; half a stone is a full clothes size different. Am also quite petite.

ArriettyJones · 08/08/2020 20:35

@Thechase

But it makes no difference you have grown up with your body you know what it needs and what it doesn’t. Being taller does not make you immune
It gives you more leaway.

So 10kg of sugar, for example, will increase your BMI by less than it would a five foot tall person’s.

MikeUniformMike · 08/08/2020 20:35

@Thechase, if height made no difference it wouldn't be used in the BMI calculation.

1.5 st of your ideal weight will be a smaller percentage than that for someone who is 5'3".

iMatter · 08/08/2020 20:38

What a weird (stupid) OP

I am 5"2' and weigh 8.5 stone

If I was 6"0' and weighed 8.5 stone I'd be seriously underweight Confused

OhhhPeee · 08/08/2020 20:42

It works the other way too. I’m tall and fat and have to lose about two stone to drop a dress size/be noticeably thinner. I work with someone short who announced she was on a diet because she could get into her old clothes if she lost 8lbs. Whereas I’m pretty sure I could lose 8lb in a fortnight if I really tried, and look exactly the same.

Also at my ideal weight I’m a size 14, so when I gain weight I’m immediately plus size, but if I was short I’d probably be a size 8 at a healthy weight and 14 when obese, and still be able to find clothes easily. I understand your point though, OP.
