when did you let your child first eat chocolate/anything with added sugar?

We're nowhere near going to (he's 9 months) but made me wonder. DH just said when would it ever feel right to let a small child consume empty calorie sugar? I agree it sounds ridiculous but I was never allowed anything sweet as a kid and it made me obsessed with it as a teenager onwards.

My main concern is because we eat it! Just the occasional thing, but still. Doesn't seem fair if we do and never let him have any. Maybe we should stop? 😳

I thought tiny taste age 2 or 3 and then very occasional stuff after that.

Pfb didn’t eat anything sugary until
She started going to birthday parties so she was probably around 3. Dc2’s first ever solid food was a chocolate fresh cream eclair. I’d left it on a plate on the floor whilst I saw to dc1. Dc2 was 5 months old and rolled over and grabbed it in both hands. I turned round and his face was covered in cream and chocolate and he was shovelling it in his mouth. Shock

Oh god knows. Probably at an age you’d consider shocking OP.

DC1 - tasted ice cream and custard around 7 months. First taste of chocolate around one. Photo of him eating homemade cake around 18 months.

DC2 - tried to steal my ice cream at 6 months.Blush I did let him have a mini muffin with his breakfast today because I was having a full sized one but they’re tiny, home-made and low sugar. I plan to be more relaxed about anything home-made this time round but no plans to offer chocolate or anything like that any time soon.

I think it’s easier to keep an only child from sugar - younger siblings see what the older ones eat from an early age and you’re also more relaxed second time round.
