Help us get DH's watch off!

BelfastSmile · 08/08/2020 10:45

DH has a watch with a metal strap. It closes by pressing down a metal clip and then opens by pressing small levers on the side which release the clip.

However, the levers seem to have stopped working - we can press them in, but the clip doesn't release.

So now he's trapped in his watch. Any ideas how we can get it off (preferably without breaking the strap)?

Tried poking a pin into some of the little holes, but that didn't do anything. Also tried pulling really hard, but that didn't work either.

Is there a jewellers anywhere near you or maybe a Timpsons who might have a tool to use?

artbringslight · 08/08/2020 10:48

Can you try a tiny squirt of wd40?

BelfastSmile · 08/08/2020 10:55

No jewellers open near us (we can probably get to one on Monday)

Hadn't thought of WD-40, will try that now.

Get a small pin and push in the 2 wee clips that hold the strap to the face of the watch!

missrks · 08/08/2020 11:01

Oh my god - please ignore how much of an idiot I am. Completely forgetting he has the watch on so you won't be able to see the pins!

MrBattersby · 08/08/2020 11:03

Maybe search youtube for removing a link or taking the strap off the watch. If you have a thin pointy thing or a very small screwdriver you might be able to get it off. Unless it's an expensive watch that's worth a bash.

Lucked · 08/08/2020 11:03

No sometimes the pins are at the side so that might work even with it on.

AdaColeman · 08/08/2020 11:04

Another vote for WD40!

Drumple · 08/08/2020 11:06

If he has the watch on, look either side of the watch where the strap attaches to the face. There will be a pin. Push that in and the strap will come off.

BelfastSmile · 08/08/2020 11:08

These are all good ideas. He's wandered off to find WD40, but if that doesn't work I'll try the rest of this list!

Assuming it is an expensive watch, remove his hand with a carving knife. Slide watch off wrist. Re-attach hand with elastoplast. Wink

FlamingoAndJohn · 08/08/2020 11:13

Hmm. I used to adjust watch straps many years ago.
Can you take a picture of the strap?

There tend to be ones where you need to get underneath to release a little bit and then others where you can just push it out from one side.
A close up picture of the strap will help.

Or Pritt stick, if you have no elastoplast to hand. Wink

Tried this and it mostly worked, but realised too late we were out of Elastoplast. Tried sellotape, but it's not really working. Any more ideas?

He's gone out now, but I'll get a photo of the strap when he comes back.

It's off! The WD40 finally kicked in!

Gaffer tape, of course.

If it doesn't move and it should - WD40 (as you've found out)
