Present ideas for 5 year old boy who has everything

Hi all - my DS is almost 5yo and I don't know what to buy him/suggest others buy for him for his birthday.

He has an older brother, so has already "inherited" plenty of playmobil, cars & garage, books, games, magnetic shapes etc. We have lots of craft stuff (even after lockdown).

Only thing we can think of is simple Lego (his brother isn't giving his up!), but nothing else.

We don't go overboard on presents - he'll usually just get them from family - but he's getting to an age now where he'll realise if he only gets 1-2 (while his brother still gets quite a few as he's easier to buy for - and we don't already have stuff in that he's interested in).

Please help!

Do they have the Insect Lore Butterfly Garden?

greyinganddecaying · 08/08/2020 00:27

Thanks Rain - yeah we have one of those! So frustrating!

A new cool bell for his bike that makes different sounds (my ds loves his, especially the siren and racing car sounds)

Kinetic sand

Electric train that drivers itself round the track.

Water bottle with his name or favourite character on it.

Any favourite TV shows? Pj Masks keep bringing it new stuff so we've been covered for several present events

AlwaysLatte · 08/08/2020 01:11

Have you seen the website where you can get a drawing made into a soft toy? Keep meaning to do that for my two, I think they're called Budsies?
An idea we had one year was a 2-man tent that we bought with some rocket fairy lights and cushions and throws, and we camped out in the garden in it with a midnight feast, he loved that.

We have the same issue and decided a couple years ago (for her 4th) her 'main present' will be a trip to a theme park of her choice (usually an overnighter but staying in a premier inn not an on-site hotel!).

Last year it was Legoland, before that Peppa Pig World, this year she wants to do Drayton Manor. She'll be 6 in October and she likes helping to plan the day, sort the picnic, packing a travel bag etc. She gets so excited!

It's not for everyone as can work out pricey but we start talking about it months before so I can look for cheap deals. She has absolutely everything (was the only grandchild on my side before her 16 month brother came along and only girl on OH's side).

Camera.

I struggle for the same reason, but got.a camera on DC2s list this year.
By next year he'll need a new tablet.

I know nobody wants to spend money for the sake of it but I'd consider a new scooter for DC2 just so they can get the colour they want.

The board game Labyrinth - very simple to play but tactical enough to be enjoyed right up to adult age.

RockingMyFiftiesNot · 08/08/2020 06:39

I was also going to suggest meccano, or Knex. Jigsaws or new board game.

My children also used to enjoy new 'everyday' things - PJs; lunch box/cool bar; rucksack. Battery toothbrush. Shower gell

Clothes ready for autumn - jumpers, cagoule

Another idea I’ve just thought of -
simple science sets.

My nearly 5 year old loves doing the Galt rainbow activities!

ThePug · 08/08/2020 07:41

We’ve bought my 4 year old a couple of CBeebies magazines over lockdown and he’s loved them. So I’m thinking of asking grandparents to get him a subscription for Christmas as we too have a house full of toys!

User56770987 · 08/08/2020 07:46

Stomp rocket

Emeeno1 · 08/08/2020 07:52

Skim read, sorry.

XFPW · 08/08/2020 07:55

Paper plane book. There are several on the market but the Usborne one is probably the best for that age group. It was my go-to for 5/6/7 year old boys when my DC were younger. Yes it’s a basically just paper, but it’s a bit different and it keeps them occupied for a while!

Boomerang/Frisbee

OgoSport OgoDiscs

OgoSport Jabbit

NannyR · 08/08/2020 07:57

Galt marble run is a fantastic toy.
My go to present for five/six year olds is a nice tin of watercolour paints and some good brushes, not expensive artist ones but something a step up from kids poster paint and chunky brushes. The Range sells a good selection.

sashh · 08/08/2020 08:49

I was going to suggest an outing of some sort, it doesn't need to be a full day I bought a single riding lesson for one of my nieces.

Things that can be added to are good, for some reason this is easier with girls, both nieces got charm bracelets do for years after I would get them a charm or two.

I had a toy farm at a similar age and you could add to it, I think you can get zoos and other similar. You could buy a farm building or two and ask others to supply the animals and workers on the farm, or zoo, or safari.

Can he read yet? I subscription to a magazine or comic, or a writing set.

A roll of wall paper - I know sounds crazy but the back is an amazing endless (to a 5 year old) space to paint and draw on.

Bendy balloons to make animals.

greyinganddecaying · 15/08/2020 13:50

Thanks all - some great ideas! We're going to plan a day out, look into a magazine subscription and investigate some of the games suggestions.

My youngest is 5 in 2 weeks. He is massively into maths and planets so isn't really one for toys, but I've got him some add on bits for his gravitrax set, another thomas track, go jetters cuddly toys, a board game, times table flashcards, and a number blocks maths programme magazine set thing!
