Overtime expectations

My partner is contracted to do 35 hours a week mon-fri. Since covid he's gradually done more and more overtime to the point where he's working 14 hours overtime and is expected work on the weekend.

He's earning 24k a year which means hourly he's getting just above minimum wage. They've basically threatened him (verbally) and said if he's not willing to do it they'll get someone who will.

I guess this is partially a vent but also, would you say that this level of overtime is normal at his wage? Feel so stuck because of covid and the likelihood of him getting a new job.

Paid or unpaid?

Vagessence · 07/08/2020 20:28

Unpaid hence it bringing him down to just over minimum wage.

@TeenPlusTwenties It wouldn't be so bad if he was getting paid. I'd still miss our time together but it wouldn't get me so riled up.

No. I earn a little more than that and do no overtime. I work my shifts as required and we are all (including management) out the door 30 seconds after we finish!

Has he signed away his rights under the European time directive? I think the limit is 48 hours per week.

What does his contract say about overtime?

In normal times I work around 55-60 hours a week contracted for 48. The other half does 35 or less and is contracted for 35. Neither of us have ready access to paid overtime but work at the norm for our industries. The other half also brings home more.

@AuditAngel he's just told me that his contract is in the office. I'm getting him to pick it up. Although realistically they'd fire him if he put up any resistance regardless of what his contract says. They'd just conjure up a fake reason and make him redundant. It's a small company and it's the director making these demands on him so he doesn't have much hope.
