Refunding money to card used, but...

I, along with my siblings, bought our mum tickets to a show with a meal for her and our dad. Thankfully the show has been rescheduled but the meal is no longer going ahead. They asked what we wanted to do with the money for the meal (donate, voucher or refund) so my parents have asked for a refund so they can get a meal elsewhere. But, I think I paid on our credit card, and I'm not sure if I can transfer money from there to a debit account.
I just wondered why they would do this? I have to phone in order to get the refund, so surely I should just be able to give my debit card details and have the money paid there. It's the same address as the credit card. It would be even easier if I could have it put onto my parents card, but obv that's a different address so can see why that might be an issue.

i think its always been a thing that the refund goes to the card you used.

lyralalala · 07/08/2020 16:21

The only time I've had a refund paid to a different card was when I didn't have the original card anymore.

It’s to stop money laundering. Moving money between accounts through refunds was a big thing for a while.

You’re likely to be charged for transferring money from a credit card, it’ll probably count as a cash withdrawal.

merryhouse · 07/08/2020 16:23

Do you never use your credit card?

It really doesn't have to be Exactly The Same Pennies that go to your parents...

I had this issue recently with plane tickets I bought for myself and a friend. I ended up just spending the amount I needed to transfer on groceries/other bits I needed to buy on my credit card, so then the money was freed up on my debit card so I could just do a bank transfer 🙂

This. Money laundering rules!

People used to hugely overpay for things and try and get the money moved to another account.

Let's say you sent your child to an independent school, where the fees were £10k per year. They'd "accidentally" pay £100k from account A. The school would notice and want to return the money, and the person would say "oh, whoopsie, can you return the £90k to Account B please?"

Surely if they give £100 back to CC, you can just give £100 from your bank account to your parents?? Confused

WellIWasInTheNeighbourhoo · 07/08/2020 16:33

If your CC balance is zero then you can just transfer the credit balance anywhere you like. If its not, then it will be eaten up as a repayment and youll have to transfer them the money from your current account.

Hairthrowaway · 07/08/2020 17:05

I don’t think the bank staff are being awkward, it’s standard procedure. I think you’re being a bit awkward if anything, you can’t “bank transfer” using a credit card (at the very least, high fees would be involved)

Have you paid the credit card off in full? If so, the refund will create a positive balance on your account which can be transferred directly to a bank account. Just call the bank.

If you have an outstanding balance on your credit card, the refund will be used against it as normal

Browzingss · 07/08/2020 17:10

Why is who doing what?

Shes wondering why the company won't refund to a different card, and it's money laundering rules / fraud prevention preventing them
BlueThursday · 07/08/2020 17:46

Money laundering prevention yes.

Also, if it puts your credit card into a credit position your provider will want that dealt with sharpish; a credit position is also a ML red flag

longtompot · 07/08/2020 18:42

Thanks for all of your replies. I've checked with them which card it is, and it is a credit card, so we will just get it put back in that. The card is usually paid off every month, but I think we have it in min payment currently. I thought cash transfers from credit cards cost extra money which is why I hoped it could be paid onto a debit card which I can either transfer or draw cash to my parents.
I thought it might be to do with money laundering, but as they are at the same address with the same name I thought it might be ok. I haven't the first idea how one would launder money.

Refunds always need to go back onto the same card used to pay with.

arewethereyetmum78 · 07/08/2020 19:49

I had this last week. It put my credit card into a credit balance so I phoned my card provider and asked them to pay it into my current account. I had the cash in under 48 hours
