I have a large garden, I can keep the grass cut etc but want someone to do flowerbeds, weeding etc.. can I be this specific? Will it be a fortune?

We do but only once a week for three hours or so. More at busy times and he just invoices us any extra hours. It means the garden stays looking tidy or thereabouts all year. He’s also got equipment for cutting hedges, pruning back the trees and higher level work. He’s good at mole catching too.
I think we pay £17 an hour - but my husband pays and I’ve never really taken much notice.

Not now but I used to have. They charged the same as our cleaner and by the hour (£12 then but it was a few years ago) usually three hours a week but sometimes more when the hedge needed trimming etc. Yes you can be specific.

I’m in outer London and the rates tend to be £20-30p/h. Our gardener has a van with all the equipment and takes the cuttings away.

Have you got the flowerbeds set up already? That would be a job for a garden designer. They can design and set it all up for you and charge an agreed fee rather than an hourly rate.

Hello my DH is a gardener started his own business after leaving a science based role. He can do anywhere from half a day every other week to a full day a week per garden.
He will also do one off projects for people but they do tend to prefer a set timeframe as his diary gets so booked up.
Also if you want to keep one you have to keep them on through the winter too. There is usually a fair bit to keep him busy in the winter and he often does the project work the like adding a new stone wall or starting a pond.

We do! Usually 2 people for 2 hours a week, costs £70 a week. They've made such a difference, the garden was an overgrown mess and now looks lovely :)

AlwaysLatte · 07/08/2020 08:30

Yes, just one morning a week, it makes a big difference! I think he charges about £12 an hour.

Thanks guys, sounds crazy but I'm nervous to phone as I'm no sure what I'm asking for. We have lovely established flower beds but look bad now we've moved in Sad not gardeners!!! I try but I'm useless. Dp can cut grass etc but has no interest otherwise.

Just ring up and ask if they have any availability and if they do, you can come over to quote.

ilovebagpuss · 07/08/2020 13:13

People ring my DH and just say it’s general border improvement and maintenance they want You could maybe Have an initial one off tidy up pruning hedge cutting etc to get it ready for then one morning a week.
As ppl have said ask them to suggest what availability they have but don’t be bullied into more time that the garden needs especially if you are going to mow.

I'm in the northwest and ours does 2-3 hours a fortnight in the spring summer and 1-2 hours a fortnight in the autumn winter months. Although he's hadn't been since feb as he went in holiday ( one month) then we went into lockdown and he was in the shielding category. He's now proposing his elderly clients ( his words not mine) I pay £12 an hour. He was doing my neighbours garden and I asked him. Ask friends neighbours if they know anyone.

goingtotown · 07/08/2020 14:02

£18 an hour & he’s useless. Won’t be having him again.

Juiceey · 07/08/2020 14:46

£17 an hour, 2 hours a week, he's fantastic. Keep him all year round though, not fair to cancel in winter.

Dugheed · 07/08/2020 16:12

All sounding good, I'm in Glasgow area so hopefully one of the cheaper prices.
