Teeth moved straight after braces removed?

Dd (12) had her braces removed yesterday after 9 months of wearing them. And they have moved slight, especially her front teeth. Is this normal? She doesn’t get her retainer for a week :(

I believe it is normal but once she has the retainer (built to match how her teeth should be) they will soon move back - they have just spent however long being pulled about so are still moveable

Thank you x

Make sure she keeps wearing them for as long as possible, years after!

My teeth were straight for about 2 years after braces then wisdom teeth came through and pushed them all back again. I wish I'd kept wearing the retainers. I hate my teeth now, it will cost £3,600 for Invisalign braces to fix them 😢

Ensure she wears her retainer as instructed or the braces will have been pointless.

Personally, I would ask about having permanent retainers put on. My children have them and they're brilliant. You have have to deal with normal retainers at all.

*never have

Please, please makes sure she wears the retainers for as long as possible.
A week is a little long to wait for the retainer in my opinion. I got mine within 2 days and it was incredibly tight when fitting the retainer, but the teeth will move back again. It may be a quite uncomfortable, almost painful the first day wearing it - she mustn't let that discourage her from wearing it.

As a PP said, try to get a permanent retainer if possible once she's received the removable - it's just a thin wire adhered to the inside of the teeth. The removable retainers can deteriorate over time/crack and need replacing.

If I could go back I'd have worn my retainer at night for years - forever if possible!!
Unfortunately I did not understand how much my stubborn front teeth would move again and how quickly, and ended up getting braces all over again in my mid 20s..

I’m four years into wearing nighttime retainers - I occasionally have a night off and I feel it the following night as they’ve definitely moved! (Am unable to have permanent retainers fitted)

Mummypig2020 · 06/08/2020 17:41

Thanks all! She’s absolutely loves her teeth and
I think will 100% stick at the retainers. She had a block brace for 9 months too so she’s used to
It. I’m a bit worried tbh. Would it be worth ringing the dentist tomorrow?

My orthodontist recommends both the permanent retainers and the night time ones together. I have both and I’m 3 years down the line. If I have. A few nights off the night time one it’s a bit tight.

CodenameVillanelle · 06/08/2020 17:53

She NEEDS a permanent retainer. Otherwise they will definitely move.
I had braces and again in my 30s when my teeth were horrendously snaggled. Got a permanent retainer now and not a hint of movement

Mummypig2020 · 06/08/2020 17:57

Do I pay private for it?

I had braces through the orthodontic department at the hospital in the late 80s/ early 90s. I think I had them for a couple of years. After the braces were removed I had a small operation/ procedure under general anaesthetic to cut something in the gum to stop the teeth moving forward (I can't remember). I think it has worked as although the teeth have moved forward, it has not been as far as it was originally.

twointhemorning · 06/08/2020 18:08

I never wore a retainer.

EveryPlanetHasAYorkshire · 06/08/2020 18:20

I second permanant retainers. I have had mine for thirteen years and I always forget they're there and I don't have to worry about my teeth shifting. It's a win win Smile.

Mummypig2020 · 06/08/2020 18:21

Will they provide it on the nhs? Willing to pay for it. The orthodontist isn’t that brill and communication tbh 😔

My permanant retainer was given automatically on the NHS. I'm not sure why I was given it but I am not complaining.

ILoveLoubieDog · 26/01/2021 17:20

Hi, thanks for all the info on permanent retainers. My DD (14) had her fixed appliances removed yesterday and permanent retainers put on both top and bottom teeth. I know you are saying they are a good thing but I feel a bit miffed they didn't call and discuss the options/pros & cons with me. Obviously I can't go in with her at the moment but I did make a point of calling to ask them to discuss anything new with me....they didn't call. The holistic side of me just doesn't like the idea of wires being glued in forever and would have preferred regular retainers. It's a private orthodontist, if that makes any difference. All thoughts welcome. Thanks
