What always amazes me is that my maternal grandfather was 1 of 5 children.
And out of all these 5 siblings only 2 children were born - my mother and one cousin (and she didn't have any children)
One of my grandfather siblings died at 13, two became spinsters because of the war.
So my great grandparents had 5 children but only my brother and I as great grandchildren from all of them. I always wondered if that would have made her sad for some reason. Maybe she expected out of such a large family it would keep growing.

RufustheSniggeringReindeer · 05/08/2020 22:16

My dad was about 4 i think...out of 6

My mum in theory was 3rd or 4th

But I’m not sure as granny was kicked out of the House for having a One night stand resulting in my mum and although she had children previously i dont know how many

Dh on the other hand had a mum and dad who were both the eldest of 2

Equimum · 05/08/2020 22:32

No. My maternal grandmother was child 4!

nokia3210567 · 05/08/2020 22:33

Nope not even one or two generations as....

I am child no 4
My Dad child no 3
My mum child no 4

Delphinium20 · 05/08/2020 22:51

Almost...only one grandfather was #3, parents, 3 other grandparents and me are #1 or #2.

OhTheRoses · 05/08/2020 22:58

Gosh this is interesting

DS and DD

Me = only
Parents = only

DH = eldest
Mother = eldest
Father = youngest of 5

So No

Me
Parents onlys
Mother = her mother 2nd
Her father 3rd
Father = his mother 2nd
his father 1st

So no.

MsEllany · 05/08/2020 23:12

No, my dad was a third but my mum was a second. Don’t actually know about my grandparents.

Dogssox · 05/08/2020 23:19

Gran and mum would have made it but I wouldn't

DipSwimSwoosh · 06/08/2020 00:58

I am number 3, mum 4, her mum 2, her dad 6
I am 3, dad 2, his mum 6, his dad 5

YerAWizardHarry · 06/08/2020 01:01

Yes I think so (although not 100% sure about paternal Grandparents)
Grandma was 2nd born
Grandad was 1st born
Dad was 1st born
Mum was 2nd born

I'm a twin born from my mums 2nd pregnancy so would technically be the 3rd child but there must be an exception for multiple births surely? Grin

Deadringer · 06/08/2020 01:06

My mum was an only child and her mother was the first born, my dad was second born as was his father, it's all moot though because I am number 12 in my family, so no.

roxfox · 06/08/2020 01:08

Yes. 1st/1st/2nd.

ImNotWhoYouThinkIam · 06/08/2020 01:17

Hmm...

Maternal Grandma was an only
Maternal Grandfather was 7 (I think) of 13
Paternal Grandparents I have no idea Blush

Mum is eldest of 2.
Dad is 3 of 5

I'm 2 of 3 but wouldn't exist if there was a 2 child limit. (I actually wouldn't exist if it wasn't for WW2 either)

DramaAlpaca · 06/08/2020 01:22

No, neither me nor DH would be here. Lots of large families two generations back.

MitziK · 06/08/2020 01:25

No.

But how would you police this?

It would come down to women's fertility being controlled, not men's.

Ilovesausages · 06/08/2020 02:45

I wouldn’t because my paternal grandmother was 11/12.

pussycatinboots · 06/08/2020 03:50

Mum was 3rd of 4
Dad was 3rd of 4 that survived, he had a brother and sister who died as toddlers in the 1920s, so technically would have been 5th of 6.

DH mum was youngest of 11 daughters.

EBearhug · 06/08/2020 03:53

I'm the eldest child. Both my parents were the eldest child in their families. Paternal grandfather was eldest (of 7), not sure about Granny, but only one other sibling anyway. Maternal grandfather only had one sibling as far as i know. No idea about maternal grandmother - I think she had several siblings, but no idea whether she was oldest or youngest or in between - my mother never really spoke to her parents, so we didn't know them. But apart from that unknown, I think I'd be here.

BikeRunSki · 06/08/2020 03:55

No, I’m number 3

UnholyStramash · 06/08/2020 13:48

Thinking about this a bit more, I think the pivotal moment for my family would have been WW1. Had either of my GFs who were both fighting in France not survived ( and it was close) then my parents wouldn’t have been born and neither would I and my sibling.

BamboozledandBefuddled · 06/08/2020 14:22

I'm the 2nd child. Mum was the youngest of five, so she wouldn't be here Grin My dad was the 2nd child, his mum was 1st or 2nd but his dad was 4th or 5th of 17. My mum's dad was one of 12 so a two child cap would mean I'd have a much smaller family tree!

passthemustard · 06/08/2020 14:37

My maternal grandad was 7th of 7 so no I wouldn't exist!
My mum was the eldest and I'm her second child but I'm my fathers 6th. So unless the two child cap only applied to women I wouldn't be here!

Tappering · 06/08/2020 14:57

Nope. My maternal grandma was number 10 out of 13. My mum was number 3 out if 3. I was number 4 out of 5.
